I just checked @Idilinaa somalia won bronze in the fiba 1981 African cup they lost to Egypt by 4 points in the semifinals

Yep

The FIBA Africa Championship 1981 was hosted by Somalia from December 15 to December 23, 1981. Games were played in the national capital Mogadishu. Egypt and Cote d'Ivoire competed in the final. The Cote d'Ivoire squad wound up winning the tournament, its first FIBA Africa Championship, and as a result qualified for the 1982 FIBA World Championship. Somalia and Algeria played for third place, with the Somalia squad emerging victorious.

The 81-51 them defeating Angola and finished with a 5-1 record as well, only lost 1 by a hair.

Never knew this hopefully hoops make a comeback in Somalia with stability we definitely have a lot of potential

A lot of potential.

They also had a competitive women's team. Many of them would go on to become scouted by prestigious American universities.
In the 1980s, I was captain and player on the Somali Women’s National Basketball Team. Our strong government supported us with the freedom to play and that led me to earn a scholarship at University of District of Columbia in America. In 1991, soon after I arrived in America, civil war broke out and prevented me from returning to Somalia until 2009.

When i saw South Sudan giving America a close run for their money recently in the olympics, i couldn't help but imagine that could have been us if that government was still around.

It's always kinda bitter sweet to look back on this.

With the right government and the right ambassadors the sky’s the limit we have girls like Jamaal pushing basketball culture and camps for the girls in Somalia and as of right now we have multiple D1 NCAA players of Somali descent kids can look up to some already on NBA draft radars

We really had a good government, you saw what that former women's team captain said in that qoute. When i see people slander the military regime i really cannot fathom it. You are not attacking Siad Barre with your rabid coolad, you are just taken a dump on the achievements and capibilities of Somalis, which are real.

If people can accept that basic premise things were way better back then and that we have the potential for greatness, InshaAllah we can start a revival. A movement that will set things back into the right motion.

In an ideal scenario i would employ both Jamad and Abdi Bile as well in the Sports/Athletics ministry.

It's almost criminal that they haven't hired him. He would be the right fit for the job than those immoral corrupt politicians who would send an obese relative , he has hands on experience, both as a participant and coaching and he deeply cares about the athletes that represent our country, look at how he mourns the death of Samiya

He’s 62 years old now just chilling in MN. Him jama aden and all the diaspora athletes are never going to be able to help kids back home because of this family business tuug culture in Xamar. The head of the athletics federation doesn’t even live in the country

Yeess!! Jama Aden is another one, that could have been a potential hire. It fosters legacy and cultural building. It's pretty standard to hire people with past atheletic and coaching achievements to lead the new generation.

You saw how Loul Deng a former south sudanese NBA player transformed the South Sudan national basketbal team and athletics program.

Another reer Waaqoyi runner made headlines , he self funded himself won silver in the African championship in Ghana, represented Somalia with pride only to be excluded from the olympics.

Mohamed recently secured second place in the 5000-meter race at the 13th African Games in Accra, Ghana, on March 22, 2024, marking Somalia's first medal on the global stage in over 35 years.
Mohamed's removal from the Olympic roster highlights systemic issues within Somali sports institutions, where corruption and nepotism have frequently undermined the selection and development of genuine athletic talent.

He looks like a good looking healthy fella as well, i bet he would be popular if he stood out at the olympics . What a disgrace

@berberaboy66 article on the former national team this guled guy might be one of the first Somalis to play college basketball in the states he got recruited in the 80s by southern Oregon from the national team

Interesting Guled was also recruited play in an American College and became an all-star player. The rest of them was left stranded abroad after going to play a 2 week long tournament in 1991.

WTF. This sounds horrific.

I can't help but feel sad for them, their futures and the country they knew was stolen from them , all they are left with are marred memories.

There whole lives where twisted upside down and they had to start fresh in new environments

I wonder if they can restart the college pipeline for Somali hoopers maybe it can start in Nairobi since it has the infrastructure with the NBA Africa league
