somali girl sued wimbledon mosque for being racist against somalis and unfairly dismissed

I think timajilic might be UK slang origin word for Asians. I met some Somalis who were unfamiliar with the term and they were from EU states with few Asians.

In a different thread i was trying to explain that it is recently constructed as a slang/edgy way of referring to them by and i haven't heard the older generation use it growing up and i haven't seen in writings but when i said this they tried dismiss it or place doubt on it.

I think ''Hindi'' makes sense because they used call the whole subcontinent Al-Hind

Some Somalis actually use to refer to themselves as “Jilic” In the olden days.

They most certainly did not and they don't refer to themselves today either. At least not as a collective group. Also thinking back there was no real fixation or importance put on hair growing up, it makes sense because Somali girls were encouraged cover their hair and Somali boys were told to cut their hair extremely short. It's only from the point of view and interaction with others this stems from.

Yeah irl I've never seen someone call them TJ. Only ever referred to them as Hindi as majority of them in my area are Hindu.

They usually call Bengalis, Pakistanis this and Indian Muslims ''Hindi'' , because those are the ones Somalis come across and interact with the most with.

I don't know if it's cause I live in a Muslim dominant area but we don't suffer from Masjids by nationality. Our mosques are very diverse and attended by all nationalities and backgrounds. I hope to see less ethnic Masjids and more integrated Masjids.

I've seen reer Canada refer to timojileecs as Xaawaji Cuun. :ftw9nwa: Regional differences in slang is fascinating.

There are plenty of non-Somalis that lead prayers at Somali mosques. Somalis should worry about racism from South Asians who are 10x your size in the UK than virtually nonexistent racism from jolly English people who almost all like or are indifferent to you.

I remember when a South Asian London mosque blamed a Somali worker when a leftist reporter was kicked out of the mosque when it was the South Asians who did it themselves. I think it was a day where community members were encouraged to visit mosques.

:pachah1:
Imagine getting bullied by Hindis whose recent ancestors were worshipping Ganesh and nem.

:dead:

Uk always makes me chuckle

I've literally never had to attempt to become friends with south Asians. I was honestly surprised reer UK was so close to them. A majority of the non somalis I ever befriended were African Americans, Ethiopians, south sudos,Mexicans and Cadaans.

Even when I've traveled out of state I've never seen somalis hanging out with south Asians. It's just seems like a British thing.

They're the most conservative and most extremist community in the diaspora because of their ties to them.

Lol this ain’t true. Thousands of Somalis in the UK pray and are on good terms with folks in Asian run mosques. My local mosque is actually Pakistani Sufi but many Somalis send their kids to the Madarasah with no issues. And Somalis used to pray in Pakistani Mosques before they established their own mosques.

Somalis and Pakistanis/Bengali Muslims in the Uk generally have a good relationship in the mosques, schools, sports activities and in universities.
I would say they are probably the closest community to Somalis in the UK on par with Algerians/Moroccans.

I don’t think it’s fair to categorise entire communities as not wanting to be in each other spaces over a few stories. I think Somalis are actually quite hard to deal with as the rise of Salafiya means many Somalis don’t understand fiqh differences or madhabs. I have seen Somalis become angry with Pakistani Muslims when their local mosques chose not to follow Saudi Eid and the Somalis thought it was waajib to follow Saudi moon sighting. I have witnessed Somalis bring their unruly children to Taraweeh in Pakistani mosques. Seen them constantly talking loudly, sometimes
even about Somali politics in the masjid.

In some places in Europe, Somali mosque committees fell out over qabil and shamefully started opening mosques associated with qabils. I think there is a thing or two Somalis can learn from Asians when it comes to mosque management.

Overall, I would not say Somalis have major issues in Pakistani mosques. Obviously people more comfortable in their own spaces.
That is 100% true. I’m actually ashamed of my self when I think about how I used to mock them when it came to fiqhi differences in my early 20s. I used to be a die hard Salafi and even used to think their women prayed like dogs since the Hanafi madhabs dictates that don’t put their lower half in the air when in sujuud. Do I agree with it? No. I still lowkey think it’s Bid’ah but they are following the ijtihad of Hanafi scholars who came to that conclusion and it isn’t something they came up with as community out of thin air and it was something I should have respected and understood that this is part of their madhab. You’re right to say that Somali people can be intolerant Salafis in many regards. My Islamic teachers many whom were Somali would also mock and think it was worrying that in their mosques they don’t say Ameen after reciting Surah Fataha during congregational prayers. I also used to find it weird that they never followed Saudi Eid times when really and truly in this regard now that I have a bit more knowledge, that actually makes sense, we are in fact meant to be following the nearest Muslim country and Saudi isn’t the nearest, it’s Morocco, so it makes perfect sense why many of them waited for the moon sighting in Morocco.

One of my fav and best run mosque ELM - East London mosque is great. Everyone prays there and tbh we have always felt welcome. Currently my area we have our own Somali mosque which is run well and it isn’t based on Qabil greatly enough. We have Somalis of all tribes and many wealthy businessmen odeys who contribute financially.

You're right there's more closed mindedness and extremism here and it may in part be due to proximity with them, but tbh we are also the most religious diaspora and I doubt we would be if it wasn't for the Islamic infrastructure that they've built here.

Like others have said, I've never had any issues in Pakistani/Bengali masjids personally. But to be quite frank I've rarely dealt with visible discrimination in general so I can't say lmaooooo, i'm good friends with pretty much every community

This is how Hindis treat qof walbo oo madow in mosques.
This happened in South Africa.

We don't take kindly to bs.

I think it's a northern Somali slang for Indians, even my cousins in Germany use it, it's not a recent thing but originates back home.
