Even a job in Somalia requires and prefers those that can read and write in English.

You can't seem to differentiate between learning in somali and learning somali as a mother tongue very different.

What jobs are there in Somalia? Not many. Most of those young people educated in Somalia will go on to university in places like Pakistan Malaysia china. They will have to re learn everything in English or at least get their English to a certain level.

I was in Jigjiga last week and I didn't come across anybody who'd have agreed with you. I saw people are enrolling onto Somali heritage/poetry schools en masse. Maybe you should take a trip to East Africa before labelling the language useless.

It may not have much influence outside of Somaliweyn right now, but as the wheels of politics turn, so could the fate of Somali language/people.

Countries like Japan and Korea both developed their vocabulary to fit the modern age so I don't see why we can't do the same. Most people here forget that the English language also went through the same development.

Another thing is that not every word has to be understood the same way. For example the word 'space' Everyone here understands what it means in English but in Japanese the concept of 'space' is understood in a whole another different way. This article talks about it in more depth:
