Somalia will join South Sudan soon owing the EAC millions of dollars
South Sudan remains the biggest defaulter of remittances to the community, with arrears of $22 million, followed by Burundi at $5 million in arrears.
South Sudan owes the EAC $29.4 million, while Burundi owes $12.4 million, Rwanda $3.6 million, Uganda $3.4 million, Tanzania $1,915 and Kenya $20.

So surprising (not really) to se ‘self proclaimed’ Somali nationalist supporting the ascension into a union, with a declared goal of giving up your sovereignty. From aspirations of our previous generation of uniting all Somali lands into a Somaliweyn, to this generation of nothing, but failure of long term strategies…

EAC isn’t bad in itself, as Somalia willl benefit from it. Only if it was a EU styled union (even though that’s probably the first stages of this membership). Just a sad state of affairs, all around

You will have access to 300 million costumers in a 300 billion dollar market

The smart Somalia will not only enjoy themselves, but they will dominated in economical, culturally, religiously

The EAC is home to an estimated 283.7 million citizens, of which over 30% is urban population. With a land area of 4.8 million square kilometres and a combined Gross Domestic Product of US$ 305.3 billion, its realisation bears great strategic and geopolitical significance and prospects for the renewed and reinvigorated EAC.

You can tell who are hustlers/business minded or not from their opinion of Somalia joining the EAC. Everyone back home seem to approve of this so that’s good

I don’t understand certain Somalis distain for Bantus. Do you think people from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania would really want to come to Somalia? They see us as a failed state. So this mass immigration to Somalia ain’t happening. We will benefit economically from this and I’m all here for it inshalllah

Also two member states are borderline, in the midst of almost starting an all out war on each other. Congo and Rwanda. Less than a day ago, Congo supposedly violated the former’s airspace, but it failed to shoot down the plane. Not to forget EAC countries’ decades of supporting militias against and destabilizing each other’s countries.

All jokes aside, you will reap the benefits soon. I will rote for you guys from the sideline of DDS/Ethiopia. With our ethnic makeup and internal relations being, EAC in practice x10. Couldn’t work here, but it may work if our blessed peaceful Bantu brothers, are in charge.

A mini-summit in Luanda has ended with an agreement for an “immediate ceasefire” from 6pm this Friday in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the Angolan Minister of Foreign Affairs announced.

During the mini-summit in Angola’s capital city, Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi met with Rwandan Foreign Minister Vincent Biruta, in the absence of President Paul Kagame, to try to end the recent tensions in eastern DRC after the failure of a ceasefire agreement reached in July. The parties also agreed to demand “the immediate withdrawal of the M23 rebels from the occupied areas,” said Angolan Foreign Minister Tete Antonio at the end of the meeting.

The delegations were received by Angolan President and African Union-appointed mediator Joao Lourenço.

The eastern DRC region has been plagued for nearly 30 years by violence from armed groups, many of them inherited from wars that bloodied the region in the wake of the 1994 Rwandan genocide. Kinshasa has also repeatedly accused its neighbor Rwanda of backing the M23 rebels, something that UN experts and US officials have also pointed to in recent months. Kenya’s former leader Uhuru Kenyatta, the East African Community’s facilitator, has been attempting to mediate over recent weeks, saying Rwandan President Paul Kagame is ready to encourage the militia to cease fire and pull back from captured territory.

Not everything boils downs to immigration. And my reasoning against a EAC federations goes beyond it. I’m actually even in favor of freedom of movement and migration (hence EU styled membership). I am also diaspora Somali, so it would be hypocritical anyways to be against it.

My main concerns are:
1. Not having fully control of your country and deciding for your own destiny/fate. Joining a union of 100s of million of people, will limit your influence.
2. Centralization of power. Even though it can be argued that, we will retain autonomy of internal affairs. Also Somalis have a history of mostly smaller/local (clan based) governance/ruler. Even uniting Somalia lead to mistrust, in many parts due to powers were centralized and subsequent feeling of marginalization.
3. Which leads to, learning from our previous (and hastily made) mistakes, from the past. In fact, Somalia should wait until it becomes stabilized and see what works best and take the time it needs. In the meanwhile, we should strike/join other partnerships with neighboring countries, that doesn’t relinquish our sovereignty, but instead encourages/enables what we seeking.

Joining the EAC is a great opportunity for Somalia’s economy. At the end of the day we will need access to medium/big market countries to grow many sectors of our economy and who better but some of our developing neighbouring countries.

And stop with this bantu boogeyman talk. it’s just another economic union with a formal governing body. There’s not going to be a central bantu government dictating over our everyday lives:mjlol:

“Kanu waa bantu🫵 I’m not going to do business with him” that’s not how business works in real life or how shit is done in this modern world.

Some Bantus will relocate to Somalia (and already have) to fill some sectors of Somalia’s economy and vice versa but it doesn’t mean thousands of bantus will flock to Somalia as soon as we join the EAC.

Completely against this, you don't become a developed country by playing fair on the free market. We need to groom a competitive domestic industry. Every Western developed wealthy nation had protectionist policies to safeguard their infant companies. Most top French international companies were either established by the governement or they were/are major share holder, I mean companies like Dexia, Renault, Orano and Airbus to name few. Most Western countriea top companies received insane subsidies from their respective governments till they could compete on the free market.

Don't do what those at the top tell you to do but what they did to get there. Hope these talks fail. Hormuud and few other companies are the only ones who can compete on the free market. We need a decade of growth before we are ready to join this customs union.
