My ancestors lived in northern Bari. They spoke Somali and Arabic and knew only to write in the Arabic script. They dressed like the Arabs and were culturally tied to them, especially southern Yemenis. In that time, their main trading partners were also Arabs and they were closer to them in many regards than their own kin in the south. Maybe in 2022 it is different, but historically some Somalis have very close ties to Arabs.

Ethnicity isn’t necessarily always tied to blood. Ethnicity is mostly tied to cultural/linguistic ties and political/religious/historical affiliation plays a big role in defining ethnicity as well.

Moroccans are mostly Arabs (although some identify as Berbers) because their culture has been Arabized and the dialect they speak (Darija) is mostly derived from Arabic (although other Arabs have a hard time understanding it).

Somalis are not Arabized and don’t speak the Arabic language or practice Arabic culture thus they’re not Arabs, it’s that simple and the vast majority of Somalis don’t identify as Arabs either.

How much of our language are loan words from Arabic. Arabs are our closest people in terms of relationship. I feel more affinity towards an Arab brother than some random Oromo or Afar. I didn't say I was Arab, I'm Somali. My point is that historically some of us, my family for example who were coastal traders spoke Arabic and were culturally linked to them. We are not begging to be Arabs, we just have a long history and they are the ones who call us Arabs. Politically we are Arab though, that's for sure.
