it's cool that we dont wanna label ourselves by an arbitrary skin colour, but i dont see the point in distancing ourselves from this issue when at the end of the day, if it was one of us selling cd's in baton rouge or told an officer we were carrying best believe our ass woulda got popped too. will it take a somali person to be killed before we start to care?

Well it depends, I don't usually label people certain way or categorize them, but regarding your Q I would say The NEGROID FAMILY, hence they're the ones who label themselves black.

Had a thorough convo with paragon about this already. If race is not relevant in your country than simply identify ethnically and leave it at that. If not, then depending on the tangibles surrounding whatever label you're discussing, you may classify yourself as black. One label I won't shy away from is African Canadian as it's an easier identifier than merely black and is far more encompassing.

Also had a convo with my brother about this who couldn't care less for the black label. Or the Somali label for that matter.

You do realize that's incorrect? Race is a social construct, and it doesn't care about your genetics or what country you were born in. It just factors in your skin color and what you look like. Barack Obama is born to an African dad, Kenyan, and a white mom. But he's considered black.

There are thousands of ethnicities, which is confusing and why everyone would rather prefer using race. Just in India alone, there are hundreds of ethnicities.

It's most likely the negative views Somalis have on the blacks that were there before them. I know my grandma kept telling me never to wear my pants like the madows, don't act like the madows, don't hang out with the madows. And etc. This makes you think that you're not like them at all.

I'm guessing you don't hang around whites that much, go to any white person and ask them where they're really from, they will mostly tell you that they're Swedish, Irish, Scottish, German, Dutch even though their 5 or 10 grandfather came to the U.S and they've never been to those Countries but they will still claim them. You can claim black if you want but don't try to police what I claim. I am Somali and proud.
