Horta, why does PL give their assets to UAE?

Those guys have invested so much in SL and will never let PL prosper. Look what they did to Bosaaso port, they left it stagnant in order to reduce competition for Berbera.

Now, Bosaaso airport is theirs also. Has Deni not learnt from Abdiweli's mistake???

^^ I agree with the poster above, UAE is in SOMALILAND'S POCKET, they will never let PL thrive, at least not to level of SL. Djibouti has learned from this when they realized reason UAE invested in their port was to slow it from taking over DUBAI PORT.

PL should hand over AIRPORT AND PORT MANAGEMENT to CHINA OR RUSSIA OR IRAN, some big power that wants to have an option in the red sea.

Mogadishu was smart enough to let turkey colonize them since they are at odds with Dubai, and SL was smart enough to let UAE manage their ports since they are at odds with Djibouti and TURKEY. Competition is healthy. Unfortunately PL should find a partner that wants to compete with others.

I have to be honest and say puntlanders, please do not expect some miracle from UAE, because they already have SL.

If i was Puntland i will be very smart and chose Iran to lead in port and airport management, and tell them Iran should have presence because we are tired of Turkey and UAE running the shows in Somalia.

Ethiopian Airlines

Excluding domestic services, Ethiopian’s top-10 destinations by weekly total seats are below. Dubai leads as a result of its thrice-daily service, two of which are by widebodies. Of the six African airports, all are major cities or located close to Ethiopia or both. Not surprisingly, most – Nairobi, Entebbe, Mombasa, and Khartoum – are in countries bordering Ethiopia. When weekly frequencies are considered, Entebbe leads, followed by Nairobi, Asmara (Eritrea), Dubai, and Juba (South Sudan). Djibouti and Hargeisa (Somaliland) are also near the top, again emphasising the significance of bordering countries.

If flights are looked at instead, Dubai is still number-one. However, Entebbe jumps to second, while Hargeisa (Somaliland), Djibouti, and Mogadishu all enter the top-10.

Am I the only one who descended in Borama Airport back in my early days of life? flew from Djibouti directly to Borama without going through Hargeisa. We should rebuilt our own airport and not be dependent on Hargeisa.

Berbera International Airport construction nears completion, Somaliland

The ongoing construction works at the Berbera International Airport in Somaliland, the second in the country after the Egal International Airport, is edging closer to completion with new infrastructure being put in place to make it one of the most modern aviation facilities in the continent, according to Dritan Gjonbalaj, the airport Director-General.


“We have put serious investment in infrastructure and equipment to ensure that the airport meets international standards and our dedicated team is putting in the finishing touches to the few remaining works before we undergo the necessary certification audits by the national aviation authorities of Somaliland,”

“As part of our commitment to building and maintaining a robust, reliable and trusted safety management system, we will also undergo a comprehensive audit by an independent international team of top-notch aviation experts to confirm our compliance with standards of the relevant Annexes to the Chicago Convention on all aspects of aviation safety and security” explained the Director-General.

Need to rebuild the Berbera airport
The Berbera airport was initially built by the Soviet Union in the 1970s, with a 4km runway, one of the longest in Africa. It was rented by Nasa during the 1980s as an emergency landing site for the Space Shuttle until 1991 when the government of former President of Somalia Siad Barre collapsed.

With the Somaliland government’s vision to turn Berbera city into an economic hub, there grew a need to rebuild the airport to serve the needs of both local and international investors and tourists at the same time.

The expected opening of the airport will add to the growing status of Berbera which has already been boosted by the brand new Berbera Seaport, the four-lane highway under construction linking the town to the Ethiopian border through the capital Hargeisa and the planned construction of the multi-million Berbera Economic Free Zone.
