Wajaale is the main trading hub for the trans-border trade in Somaliland and is becoming a growing agricultural center. Wajaale falls under Gabiley district which is the most fertile district in Somaliland and with this project, we can stop depending on Ethiopia and feed ourselves.

The Ministry of Agriculture Development has moved to new headquarters in the capital Hargeisa.

This follows the official opening by the Somaliland president Musa Bihi Abdi of a new two storey building whose construction was solely funded through citizens tax money.

The new ministry of agriculture premises encompasses 12 offices and a large conference hall, as well as extensively decorated courtyards and parking lots, as well as a new rainwater tank.

At the unveiling ceremony held at the headquarters of the Ministry of Agricultural Development, the president first inspected the various offices of the new building, and ministry officials briefed the president.

the Minister of Agricultural Development of the Republic of Somaliland, Mr. Ahmed Mumin Seed, made a brief speech at the event, highlighting the significant role of the Ministry of Agricultural Development in the nation and its efforts to increase agricultural production. He said, “The ministry is the lifeblood of the nation to be proud of, and we are in we are now in the planting season, so if we get good rain our production will be good, and if it rains we will produce less. “We are also in the process of building dams.”

The minister said that as a ministry, they have made it possible to completely eliminate the Importation of seeds , which have caused a lot of problems to the soil, and have replaced the seeds that will soon be distributed to the country’s farmers.

The Ministry of agriculture has announced on Wednesday that it will purchase local staple food from the farmers across the country. The agriculture minister, Honorable Ahmed Mumin Seed has reiterated that it is the right time to implement a pledge made by Somaliland Head of State that the government will buy local products from the farming communities. Seed said: “The president promised to buy local food from the farmers. The food purchase was due to begin but the finance minister is out of the country. We will start to purchase the crop harvest in last spring from the farming community. The budget allocated for the project is now available. The minister has asserted that the purchase is aimed at motivating farmers and boost crop production across the country. On the other hand, the ministry of agriculture has handed over 2800 sacks to the chairman of SL Food Reserve agency including maize, sorghum, and wheat harvested from Wajale plains that the ministry of agri oversees. The handing over ceremony was held at Wajale plains where the crops were harvested.

This is a great move. Securing food is vital. Hopefully they can build some silos and start reserving grain for emergency use.

a good start. importing food is one of the most dangerous things a country can do, having your own food source is easily the most important thing for any country that wishes to call itself "developed". inshallah in the future somaliland and even somalia will be able to subsidise their agricultural sectors

Somalilands private sector has undertaken major farming projects to reach self sustainability. The government also made reforms and helped small/medium scale farming to increase production throughout the nation. Once the local production of a good is sufficient the SL Government puts tariffs on the imported good. Within 1 year Somaliland has seen a huge reduction in key agricultural goods.

Prior to the farming boom Somaliland relied heavily on Ethiopian produce and somewhat on Somalia produce. In the marketplace the locals refuse to buy produce from outside if its produced internally and they say they prefer the waddani fruits/vegetables. Landers take a bow

alot of african nations (even the more developed ones like botswana and SA) rely on food imports. a stable democracy and no reliance on food importation even with recognition is insane. somaliland getting on the road to this without it is insane. good shit

The government wants to cut out any dependency on imports. They were helping small/medium scale farmers till their land. A few points MBC mentioned that the government was working one to increase productivity and investment. The main one is establishing a national seed bank

• We established The Institute of Agricultural Research with the aim of modernizing and developing farming and irrigation in the country to achieve self-sufficiency in agricultural production.
• We are aware that the original seeds of our crops have vanished and as such we have succeeded in reviving 23 different types of seeds which were popular in the country. We aim to establish a National Seed Bank.
