No it's not like people never wore it in the but cities. My mum as a teenager in Djibouti in 1980s and 90s didn't wear it during school days but after she was considered an adult she did put it on. But it was a mixture for teen girls in school. Adult women definitely wore hijab though saying otherwise it's a bit of a lie.Only mogadishu and cities were liberal with hijabs. People in the countryside were always covered.
Well yeah i said they weren’t common but people were wearing it but now it’s a cultural expectationTbh I never heard of Somalis wearing the niqab or jilbab before 91. In my family photo albums a lot of the women were either without a hijab or they wore a dirac and shalmad
Also I’ve seen older photos of women in the miyii and they wore a guntiino. They didn’t cover their arms and their hijab barely covered their hair

Is there even a slight chance that stability and life like this will ever return?Even in Muqdisho people wore hijab, but more closely to the traditional reer miyi way.
Only in government controlled settings was hijab discouraged but still somewhat worn. You can see in this doc girls in school having a headscarf.
Check starting from 14:20 mark how somali women dressed mostly. Thats basically what you see women wearing in them 1900 pictures.
Also this short doc shows what the average folk men and women wore
Yes, only if politicians decide to wake up.Is there even a slight chance that stability and life like this will ever return?
Garbasaars were pretty popular and sheer scarves to cover the chest with a little scarf to cover the hair. All the pictures and or videos I’ve seen if jilabs were 1930s ish. Were you not allowed to wear hijabs in school???Most people didn't really wear proper hijab back then. Most would cover their hear of course but not with a hijab or even garbasaar. In government schools girls could not wear hijaab, even if they wanted to. Siyaad Barre was truly a cursed man.

Yep. It's only after the civil war that they started covering for their safety and it stuck. Got worse when AS invaded. My parents said they saw a lot of non hijabis around before the civil war. My mom and her friends never had the hijab in their old pictures.
When my family came to the west I even had a few aunties that were non hijabis for most of their teens and 20s.
Civil war definitely made somalis back home way more religious & conservative.

The civil war did make everyone more religious my mum doesn’t have pictures form back when she was in Somalia but she does have pictures when she came to Europe and she dressed like how the average young Somali woman did back home in the late 80s and early 90s on the contrary I don’t like how liberal Somalis online act like absolutely nobody in Somalia wore a hijab when in reality they some did some didn’t.Also my mum starting wearing a full on jilbab in 2005 before she wasn’t wearing a hijab she was in her mid to late 20s and I started wearing a hijab since I was 3 years old a baby one to school. My parents said they saw a lot of non hijabis around before the civil war. You reminded me of so many Somali liberals and anti-Somalis at the same timeI saw Somali women butt naked in pictures from the 80s, so all Somali women were butt naked in the 80s.
I'm reflecting their stale logic based on nonsense. You reminded me of so many Somali liberals and anti-Somalis at the same time
