It's rarely as public as it is on the internet, at least among the younger generation. Most young Somalis I meet don't tend to ask me about my clan or even where in Somalia I'm from. The majority of young Somalis, at least in the diaspora, I've seen don't look to care for this qabiil stuff unless their parents tried way too hard to make them care.
I'm going to be honest with you, it's sad to see how kids who knew next to nothing about qabiil slowly but surely turn qabiilist.

Yeah, it is... I had a cousin back in the mamaland. We were good friends until we turned like 13 and then his parents suddenly shipped him to Sanaag. This kid gave zero shits about qabiilist stuff when we were younger and wasn't even aware of his clan (Habr Awal) but when I saw him again for the first time a few years back (we were 22) - he's suddenly hardcore about this shit. Was pretty sad to look at. I got a normal upper middle class upbringing in Singapore (left Saudi when I was eight and lived in Singapore until I hit 23) and my day to day concerns were finding ways to make life better for people back home, hitting the gym and reading Japanese Manga while this poor sap was droning on about how "awesome" his clan was while bad-mouthing various other clans. Felt like he'd been poisoned, to be honest.

Sxb don't blow my cover :birdman:

Sorry, sxb. I didn't mean to do you like that but she was getting real worked up and I had to be a white knight . I hope you understand.

So they see Habr Awals as being "above them" on some sort of social ladder?

I hear Singapore is something of a model place now

Yeah, it's not bad. Only problem with it is that driving is murder there - they make cars ultra expensive there and generally just pull up a lot of hurdles in order to force people into public transport. This is annoying for me because I really like driving, lol. Nice place otherwise. Very clean.
