Every person believes that there is something that separates them from others through clear and defined traits. According to Freud, "These traits, if examined closely, often represent nothing more than subtle differences, and sometimes even imagined ones." He adds that an individual may exaggerate the sense of these subtle differences in order to preserve their individual ego, providing a sense of uniqueness and preventing them from dissolving into others or into anything outside of themselves. While these differences may indeed be subtle and not truly decisive, they represent a critical and essential need for the individual. Violating them generates an aggressive response and a defensive mechanism that may be irrational and characterized by violence."
