TikTok ‘clan battles’ over music and poetry stoking tensions in Somalia 🤡

The contests are viewed on thousands of smartphone screens across Somalia and beyond, and usually feature two rivals who look like typical fresh-faced Generation Z influencers.

Side-by-side on the screen, each of these digital gladiators performs to whip up their supporters, who respond with a blizzard of cute emojis and paid-for digital tributes.

The game might use the live battle feature of the voguish TikTok app, but the sentiments expressed by these 21st century adversaries stem from some of Somalia’s oldest, but also most divisive traditions.

Using music, speeches, poetry and jibes, each player takes it in turn to extol the virtues of their own clan, and at times to mock or denigrate that of their opponent.

The winner is the player whose performance garners the most digital gifts, and the loser suffers the public humiliation of having to admit the supremacy of another clan.

Such live online contests, which are known as “clan debates”, “clan wars”, or The Big Tribal Game, can attract tens of thousands of spectators in Somalia itself, but also around the world in the large Somali diaspora.

How I felt reading that

The real joke is the people who spend their own money on this clown show.

If they were serious they would donate to the poor or orphans of their clan. Or do something charitable.

They need to be mocked and humiliated for spending their money on an app and games. It is outrageous.

On top of that, the people who compete are some of the lowliest people you can find. Only such a person would put their face online yelling insults on an app to collect donations.

They need to be humiliated out of this behaviour, those who spend the most are the most pathetic.

Who wrote the article? I can’t see the name of the author. Sure they burrowed this idea from the Somali agents who wrote a similar article for the bbc I think it was. Find it strange a prominent Zionist-anti immigrant newspaper in the UK would devout an article to Somali TikTok battles.

Who wrote the article? I can’t see the name of the author. Sure they burrowed this idea from the Somali agents who wrote a similar article for the bbc I think it was. Find it strange a prominent Zionist-anti immigrant newspaper in the UK would devout an article to Somali TikTok battles.

That is what they do. They dedicate all their energy to writing only negative articles about Somalis and Somalia. They will always find something negative to promote.

Notice how little they dedicate to the apocalyptical civil wars raging next door in ethiopia? Then look at their dedication to writing articles about any negative event out of Somalia, all in unison.

the internet is the most enlightening creation of man, you get to witness firsthand the kind of content that attracts genuinely low IQ members of society. how many hours do you think they spend watching these a day? all those bright flashing lights and colors, animations, dopamine hits of money on the screen telling you that your team is 'winning' all while it's centered around the most socially toxic part of your culture.

i've seen people spend thousands of dollars on these shows that are purposefully designed to keep a childs attention all the while it's a whole ass parent numbing their brain on it. absolutely bleak

I missed the names of @ the top. Article was written by mister Mohamed Gaboobe (freelance journalist), and Ben Farmer, Africa correspondent for the daily telegraph.

MR Gaboobe was also the individual who wrote the article about the alcohol bandits smuggling for the BBC. Seems like he’s trying to get a come up by writing these types of articles for western news outlets.
