So regarding the recent news about Puntland's crackdown on undocumented migrants, is it really right or fair for Puntland or any other Somali state for that matter to deport Ethiopians when Ethiopia had historically always allowed waves of Somali refugees to enter galbeed? Genuine question here since many Somalis online are cheering for these acts yet are fine when Somalis move into Ethiopia.

The difference is that ethiopians are migrating into lands that arent theirs while somalis are migrating into land that is theirs.

Galbeed is our land. They werent entering because of the benevolence of Ethiopia. They were entering because we accept our fellow Somalis no matter the Qabil to our regions and we also help fundraise for them too.

Abiy and Muse Biixi used the Oromo Aba Gadas (elders) to sweeten up the public for the treacherous so-called agreement. Some Some Somalised Oromos came out of in support of Ethiopia annexing Zeila coast. Now people are suspicious of Oromos in places like Borana and even Hargeysa.

A large number of Oromos are also said to have joined Isis in the mountains.

So the issue is also political rather than a civil issue. This doesn’t mean oromos in Somalia should be mistreated. What is undeniable is that both oromos and afar maybe used to limit Somali territory and push Somalis back from their natural borders in Ethiopia. We have already seen this with the displacement of Somalis from strategic towns in Ethiopia by the Afar militia using heavy arms from the Tigray conflict.


It also has to be noted: Somalis do not have free rein to settle or work inside the major cities of neighbouring states. You need a Somali passport to travel for medical aid to Ethiopia. Kenya is very strict with Somalis travelling there.

Somalis can’t just have a policy of “he’s a Mozlem yo” and let everyone in without checks. The error of this policy is shown in the Ethiopians who travelled through SL then onto punt land mountains.

Also, Somalia does not need large numbers of economic migrants. Most of these people aren’t fleeing war: they’ve come to work or attempt to migrate to Middle East.

2 million Somalis were displaced from Eastern Oromia a few years ago. Even Somali truck drivers avoid traveling beyond Dire Dawa cuz its highly risky for ethnic Somalis.

Ethiopians are treated 20x better in Somalia than Somalis are in Ethiopia proper. I just returned from Xamar.Ethiopians own entire neighborhoods there. I even saw a dozen of them in Guriceel and locals didn’t seem to mind. The MoU hasn’t changed much, at least in the south. I can’t speak for the northeast or northwest.

That said, the gov gotta controlled and disciplined those unruly pastoralists. Everyone deserves dignity.

As ethnic group, we fight each other more then external threats, while Oromo, Habesha and Tigrey do have separation but when it gets serious, there is no clan or religious divide, they form militias and get chimp out on the other side.
