The dude made the exact same threats in his first term and used it as leverage to change nafta into usmca which was a much better deal for America. Trump wants to succeed for the simple fact that he has a big ego so he probably won’t do dumb shit like blanket tariffs
Yes it's the politicians , the whole platform of the right wing party is rooted in scapegoating different demographics, through immigrations, race, gender, religion etc . They don't run on real policies.
Often they do this take the attention away from the exploitation by corporations and the hording of wealth by rich elites and the corruption in the political system.

I think it's fair to say they play on peoples ignorance and fears/xenophobia, but there are equally tolerance, co-existence and cooperation they could nurture that exist among people.
Remember the example about Maine, the police and the whole community embraced Somalis and said they cherish us. Donald Trump and his republican went there to drugg up anti-immigration sentiments.
He also went to insult Milwaukee peddle crime narrative, when crime has gone down and most districts within the city has very low crime rates.

It's like their whole mantra is to insult people, countries, cities and come with stats to justify it. He could have gone there to praise them for lowering crime significantly and increase jobs and private sector economic activity. If he had something he thinks could be improved upon he could make recommendations and tell them what policies he would implement to benefit them. Nope he did not do any of that, he goes to cities lampoon about crime and immigrants even when they don't have a problem with crime or immigration.

Biden and Harris administration actually had some of the toughest and stricted immigration policies in US history
Biden expelled almost 2 million more migrants than Donald Trump btw. Enacted similar immigration ban policies and more border policing.
