Wait people actually get mad at tht word in london?

It's even banned on this site. Weird, wallahi. It’s not a derogatory term any more than timo jileec—it literally means the opposite and simply describes a hair texture more common among "pure" SSA people, just as Indians tend to have straight to wavy hair more often than we do, despite sometimes having a similar complexion. But yeah, some Somalis use it negatively due to their racist views toward other Africans, which has distorted its meaning to some non-Somalis in parts like the UK as something akin to the n-word. The real equivalent of that in our culture, though, is Adoon which literally means slave.

I think we only have ourselves to blame tbh. And you're right, Madow is not a derogartory term inherently. Sadly texturism and featurism is rife in somali society (in a lot of African societies thanks to colonialism)

Yeah i know tht i just didnt know tht the uk black people hate it tht much. I thought it was just a social media thing. Do timo jileecs(paki/indian) know we call them tht? Lol the first time i heard adoon being used to refer to them is when i was in kenya. It was crazy hearing tht. In america we say the j word or just madow.

@Ashraf @Taintedlove
UK somalis made it a slur. I didn't even know what J***** was until I started interacting with Somali TikTok. Never heard that word irl.

I've even seen these mfs hop on TikTok lives and call random black people J*****.

Explaining to none somalis that J***** isn't a slur is pointless since we have a bunch of mfs using it in a derogatory way.

No, it became popular on the Internet. None in the UK said it in person or to people’s faces.

It became popular online because of UK somalis. UK malis were the main ones spamming J***** while beefing with Madows
Yeah uk somalis got huge problems with those african/caribeans over there but the feeling is mutual. The hate they have for somalis is crazy. I remember tht uk street youtube video asking which country is the ugliest and all the black uks said somalia. I was shocked. It wouldnt be said in america lol the africans here are usually cool with us. The black americans are 50/50 but most dont know us

It is used in a derogatory manner 99% of the time and you know it

I mean I think they can understand that most somalis don’t actually hold these views towards them. I do know that somalis and madows in the UK haven’t always gotten along but I definitely think that this generation doesn’t know too much about that. I could be wrong.🤷🏾‍♀️

Madow is used like a slur among older generations tbh. They say it with such disgust lmao

Well, that’s good to hear that people get along for the most part. I be honest as someone who loves hating on UK somalis, I can’t lie the hate towards y’all can be too much especially when American/Canadian somalis don’t have the perfect track record.

I dislike this country but nothing makes me more patriotic than north American somalis shitting on us.

Somalis are lucky they live states like Minnesota and Maine, where there isn't much AAs. Or you guys would've had the same problem.

I mean I live in Tennessee so we have more African Americans down here. But because there isn’t anywhere near as many somalis here as there is in Minnesota I don’t think somalis have issues with them (I mean at least I didn’t). But then again I am really disconnected from the community here.
