It’s not a derogatory term any more than timo jileec—it literally means the opposite and simply describes a hair texture more common among "pure" SSA people, just as Indians tend to have straight to wavy hair more often than we do, despite sometimes having a similar complexion. But yeah, some Somalis use it negatively due to their racist views toward other Africans, which has distorted its meaning to some non-Somalis in parts like the UK as something akin to the n-word. The real equivalent of that in our culture, though, is Adoon which literally means slave.
