Exactly, MSB used national resources for clan interests to free his reer abti (Ogaden) which destroyed the union. He could've armed the rebels and supported them without direct war. He armed Djibouti rebels, Eritrean rebels, South Africans and so on. At the end of the day, The union won against Ethiopians but the war weakened and created mistrust against the union.
If he trained the rebels, armed and sent them highly trained SNA to join the rebels then the rebels would've won because Ethiopians were also fighting against each other But the war he declared on Ethiopia made the Ethiopians one enemy which was Somalis. The "Invasion" on Ethiopia made Somalia look rogue state which is why the Soviets and the west started supplying the Ethiopians.
When the rebels won they would've declared west Somalia as an independent state like Eritrea then Somalia would've trained them the army and supported them. then do the same with NFD after that Somalia, West Somalia, NFD would create a defense council where the three states protect each other.
