why is light skin seen as the gold standard?

ive noticed that light skin is seen as the gold standard in what appears to be most of the world whereas being dark skin is seen as ugly and undesirable, this is even prevalent in somali society as well. people with with dark skin are often insulted explicitly or subtly. skin bleaching is a serious issue in many parts of the world because having light/fair skin is seen as beautiful. can this only be attributed to beauty standards and in the west and it being skewed towards light/white skin or is there more to it?

I can’t speak for the rest of the world, but I think it has to do with darker skin being associated with manual labour (being outside working in the sun all day), and manual labour was associated with poor people. So, lighter skin is seen as richer and thus more desirable, obviously -> rich >>> poor. This new wave of somalis preferring or wanting lighter skin is pretty recent though, not sure what brought it on. Dark skin is so pretty, dark skinned people always look glowy, especially in hot and sunny countries like Somalia. Sad that someone would wipe it away.

Somalis are followers, if being bold was considered a beauty standard by whites and none blacks they'd all be bold.

saddest thing is my light skin somali brothers went through the something similar to us. We didn’t forget those dark ages when you guys would choose Reer xamars over us. @Raaxeeye do not let her ruin the moment darkskin or lightskin, we are both Kings.
