NYC is not gaajo although I wouldn’t want to live there. I think you are thinking of the boroughs like Bronx, Queens etc. Manhattan is quite different though.

They’re not fobs but have been living there for a long time, many of the young people there have moved to Minnesota.
I am in favor of reviving the NYC Somali community and Somalis buying back our historic neighborhoods and businesses. And collect those stories and retell it
It will also offset the narrative of us being some poor non-American refugees but rather situate Somali Americans as a community that's been part of the American story and helped build the country and created an avenue for future migrants.
That we took part in the making of the so called capital of the world.

A lot of the Somalis in Chicago have been there for a long time. In recent times though a lot of them moved to Minnesota or other nearby states.
Way better that Somalis weren’t settled there en masse post civil war. A big reason why Somalis in the US have been doing so well is that Minnesota and Ohio are very affordable states.

There were a lot of young Somalis there in the 70's - early 90's. Many moved to the DMV afterwards to connect with the other large pre-Civil War community.
I wish there were more Somalis in NYC. We have large Somali communities in all global cities except NYC. NYC has the largest Muslim community in the U.S. we would've done just fine as long as Somalis didn't live in the Bronx. They would've done just fine in Queens and Staten Island.
There were some old heads that lived in Brooklyn when I used to live there and hang around the hookah spots - chewing qat.
