The West had Russia cornered, but Trump chose to concede to Putin's pressure, giving him leverage on Ukraine. This led to Trump humiliating and pressuring Zelensky into accepting humiliating terms for a ceasefire. Ukraine eventually accepted, and Trump was then to contact Russia to make Putin accept the deal as well. However, Putin made Trump agree a limited ceasefire where the Russia will not attack Ukraine infrastructure, and in return protects Russia's energy infrastructure, not a complete ceasefire. The phone call between Trump and Putin was a complete win for Putin, who successfully manipulated Trump into accepting a deal that serves Russia's interests.
