its a bantu language

and legend says it is the origin of all languages

The Wa-Sania, a Bantu people of East African origin have a tale that in the beginning, the peoples of the earth knew only one language, but during a severe famine, a madness struck the people, causing them to wander in all directions, jabbering strange words (af may may), and this is how different languages came about.

A god who speaks all languages is a theme in African mythology, two examples being Eshu of the Yoruba, a trickster who is a messenger of the gods. Eshu has a parallel in Legba from the Fon people of Benin. Another Yoruba god who speaks all the languages of the world is Orunmila, the god of divination.

Somali earth scientists ( taariikhyahan ) have already established an ontological framework concerning the relationship between different languages and dialects spoken in the Horn .

In oral Somali linguistic metaphysics , a language is known as AF,meanimg mouth (or tongue if we use a Eurocentric term ).A dialect is referred to as laajad ( dialect ). reer waqooyi, reer Bari , galbeed (North , East , west ) are all dialects of AF maxa tiri Somali branch *. Sayid Mohamed Hassan clearly could not comprehend a word of af Maay , famously labelling it as a language of jinn ,because he spoke the galbeed dialect of af Maxa tiri.

Until the modern era , Somalis considered af maay and af Maxa tiri to be separate "Afs " or languages ,clearly evident even in the naming of the tongues. Af maxa tiri , or what we know refer to as "af soomaali", became dominant due to three factors :

1. Numerical advantage over af maay speakers ; 2. Migration and conquest of vast lands by af maxa tiri speakers; thirdly and lastly, by political propaganda of the somaliweyn movement , which used the state apparatus to champion the " Somalis have one language" mantra . When af Maxa tiri was chosen as the official written script of Somalia , it was thus a wrap and all the languages spoken by "Somalis " were labeleld as " dialects " of af Maxa tiri .

What we know as " Af soomali " is merely one of several languages spoken by people of Somali origin and Coastal knee grow and mulato Arab people .

My dad speaks Af Maay, I can understand it but my speech is below average.

It's most likely that Af Maxa Tiri is an off-shoot of Af Maay.

One thing I dislike about Somalis is the arrogance they display, even in matters they have little knowledge of.

I'm not surprised it's the same people who believe their dialect to be the correct/pure Somali are the same ones displaying their ignorance.

Never met anyone that speaks may may in real life. Seems may may speakers are rare in UK.

True. Most live in USA or Australia. But you will find other qabiils who speak Af Maay too because they live among them. I have come across quite a few Mareexaans ,Hawaadles, iyo those from Jubbaland who speak Af Maay.

They are purely Cushitic and as Somali as the rest of us. People mistakenly think they've absorbed Bantu because many Bantu speak af-Maay Maay as a result of living alongside the Raxanwayn.
Also, some clans are allowed to claim other clans to gain their protection.
