An independent Puntland?

Since there's almost zero hope to revive the Somali state as pre 1991 when the dictatorship of president ended, would it be feasible for Puntland to seek a full-fledged independence from what was once known as the Somali republic? I mean we cannot stay hostage to the south i.e Muqdisho nor can we trust or agree to a central rulership based in Muqdisho, the same city where we are not welcome since the purge of our people in 1991, so why waste more time on a non existing country.. This doesn't mean other Somalis wouldn't be welcome in state of Puntland, all Somalis will be welcome to work, invest and do business in Puntland, but politics and anything related to politics will be strictly reserved only for the citizens of Puntland.. What do you guys think of this proposal? Going forward from today, I renounce my Somali citizenship or being referred to as a Somali, from today on and going forward I will a Puntlander and claim a Puntlander.. Let us all fellow Puntlanders make this our national identity..

Lol, how I'm being negative? we are literally stuck in a dead state, I think muqdisho and area could also form a beautiful wealthy state, we can have our own seperate borders and trade with each other, people can also move and work in the different states but we will have our own seperate goverment, police and armies, we can even form a mini NATO where we'll assist each other if any of our states get invaded by a foreign nation or terrorists, this would be much better then being stuck in a failed state.

It's not feasible to support a secession at all considering we have proposed the federal system and had a major impact on the provisional constitution. HSM had 2 failed presidential terms and wasted precious years of our State building process but he will be gone soon. We can't declare secession as a reaction of a failed president's erratic policies.

We're literally putting our people in the South at risk for declaring a secession, not to mention our long-held dreams of a greater Somalia where we eventually incorporate our people in DDSI into Somalia.

The federal system has failed, it seems our southern neighbors just enjoy living in a state of continuous anarchy, if there are any Puntlanders who fear persecution in the south they're welcome to move to PL to relocate.. DDSI is an Ethiopian territory, we already failed to free those regions so we better focus on creating a strong Puntland only then can we consider helping them..

I was joking.

SL should have never been a threat to Harti /PL if it wasn’t for internal issues (dhulbahante disunity and PL not developing periphery areas). PL or the wider Hartis should be a lot more stronger militarily just due to sheer land mass. You still have armed sub clans in 2024 and some Arabs able to roam around the mountains.

But that’s another debate for another day.


Even SL is a shambles militarily and they’ve resorted to to armed sub clans which shows how bad modern Somali politicians really are.

Very unlikely sxb. If the Kurds couldn't get their own country then no qabil ever will. There is a world order to maintain and letting one region of a country (that shares the same ethnicity and culture with the rest) become its own country will set a dangerous precedence in a continent full of secessionist movements. And besides, we should be striving for unity of all Somalis, you are advocating for something Ethiopia has been planning and wishing all this time and unlike Eritrea, no qabil state can stand its own against Ethiopia.

BTW, I'm all for Puntland getting as much autonomy just short of outright independence, they don't deserve to be shackled by Mogadishu since they existed 14 years before the FGS did. It will still be unity but with equal power sharing.
