I see this arguement often

Somalis were Somali before Islam, there are christian Somalis, nomads who don't know the first thing about the deen and are truer Somalis than you or I Geraaraheer

But it's not backed up.

The Somali identity grew alongside and because of Islam. Every Somali was and has been born a Muslim. There is no such thing as a nomad who doesn't know the deen.

If you can find me a written account of Somalis by the collective name Somali or by a current clan before Islam I'll happily accept it. Keep the discussion civil and limited to the question at hand.

The question is did Somalis exist before Islam or did Somalis rise as a group because of the advent of Islam? Therefore is it correct for an Atheist to say he wants to go back to before Islam, when there is no written history of us (Somalis) during that period?

I read it long time ago online that Hebrew people moved from Yemen and crossed sea to the horn, lived with us (where they got E1b1b ) then moved to Egypt where prophet Musa where born.

I don't think anyone is arguing for a return to pre Islamic customs, the point is that one should separate religious identity from ethnic identity. Nobody merges Islam with their ethnic identity. For example, Arabs don't do it, Pakistanis don't do it, nobody does it but Somalis. It's intriguing if I'm honest.

Nonetheless, Somalis have existed before Islam.

Arabs, Pakis and Afghans merge their culture with Islam moreso than us. Arabs and Afghans with the tents that got assosciated with Islam and got picked up by some Somalis which is rather sad, and also the Pakis with their honour killings which they profess to do because of religion. Us Somalis are on the far left of the extremes, though when we do copy them it becomes disasterous.

I'm talking about the Somali identity and culture we have today. I believe in started and rose alongside Islam. Before that we were not "Somalis" (proto-Somalis is another more fitting name) and not much is known about them except for some trade which we have continued. Before that again we were Puntites but that deserves more in depth studying imo.

I've seen far to many argue that we should go back to before Islam, but they never fully seem to know what that is or entails. Imo it would be better to argue for "moving forwards" instead.

Before Islam the people that inhabited the region were called "Berbers" not Somali. The first account of the word "Somali" was the 1500s when we invaded Ethiopia. No one knows exactly when Somali was invented for a group of people but if you believe it came from Samaale the person then Consider this... Samaale can be calculated to be from the 6th-7th century so Somalis started to exist exactly around the time Islam was born.

Also consider the fact that the earliest Muslims from the 7th century built a mosque in Zeila during 2 Hijra.... that means Islam has been with Somalis for as long as Islam existed! Somali culture has been completely shaped by Islam so much so that all previous versions would be almost completely foreign today. More than 20% of the language is Arabic damn.

Who cares about the Somali before Islam though? They didn't achieve much compared to Somalis between the years 616 - 1616 or Somalis from 1616 - 2016.
They weren't even Somali just alien cushitic predecessors who would have nothing in common with us today. We have Islam to thank for our identity and culture.
