How can you guys blame Somalis for not speaking Somali if their parents don't teach them how to speak Somali?

Somali isn't something you can self-study online or with books

You can be eager to study Somali on your own time. I learnt my basic Somali from my Parents but I mostly learnt from asking my Ayeeyo to tell me stories about the past and asking my Uncles/Aunties all sorts of questions about Somalia.

It's not scared just to us, we just don't share for fear of further discrimination
Does it have a strong Semitic foundation since it's related to Hebrew or other ancient languages such as Aramaic or is it a Cushitic language that has similarities to Somali?

I was born and raised in all cadaan neighborhood and I'm fluent in Somali. It's pathetic seeing these grown ass people who came to the states 10 years ago not being able to communicate in their mother's tongue. And why are they always so shocked when they hear you speak, "how is your Somali so good" because I'm Somali :drakewtf:better question is how is yours so bad? And your English isn't even better. These idiots are lost somewhere in between.

That's not really fair. It's not the best but I can speak Somali. I was born and raised in the west. My parents both speak English fluently and switch between Somali and English at home bc of us but bc I was raised with my ayeyos in the house I'm okay. My younger siblings understand Somali but never speak it, there are different circumstances. Anyway I'm gonna perfect my Somali by spending sometime in Somalia InshaAllah.

You are so right. It's because nobody in your household speaks Englis. If this isn't the case kudos to you. Can you start typing in fluent Somali then?

I'm pissed off Waryaada. How can you be Somali and not know Somali WTF. Like how is this possible. I've been staying at my younger cousins house for the past two weeks and these sambacs don't know Somali. They sound fuckin autistic when they speak and they have a hint of that Abgaal accent when they talk when they speak which makes things worse. Anyone on Somalispot who doesn't know Somali should be ashamed of themselves.

A big observation I have also made is Somali people shying away to speak Somali in each other in public. You see Eastern Europeans, Arabs, Asians and all other races speaking their mother tongue but why are the Somali youth so shy to speak their language?

No it also includes me
I feel very ashamed for forgetting my own language..even though i understand it 100%
But i have to say, my somali was first really good but then i heard these 2 family members of mine talking about me that i dont speak somali good and they were laughing and everything (at that time i was like 10 or something and they didnt think i understood them at all) so i got very shy talking my own language ever since

After that i also went to high school, and most of the day i was at school and when i came home i didnt speak very much somali because i would be too busy to interact with my mom..
Later it becomes a vicious circle..because you're shy you speak less somali, and because you speak less somali you will forget it more likely and get more shy etc

But its also because ive never been to somalia, dont live in a somali community at all..and my mom is the only native somali at my home, so i domt hear much somali around..

..but i think its more important to not laugh at children their somali, most of us know more languages than these somali people who make fun of children their language, i know basic german/french and my english is OK and then my dutch is perfect (cadaans always think im adopted)

For me though, ill go to somalia next summer for 3-6 months and then ill learn it back inshallah :banderas:
