President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud (68) visited Chancellor Olaf Scholz (66) today – before that he made the remigration promise in BILD


In the midst of his traffic light crisis, Olaf Scholz (66, SPD) received a real crisis ruler in his chancellery today: the President of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud (68). His country is considered a terrorist and pirate nest and a famine zone on the Horn of Africa, and German warships patrolled the coast for 14 years to protect merchant ships.

Sheikh Mohamud brought a promise:

More than 60,000 Somalis live in Germany today - the vast majority as asylum seekers! And the trend is rising! This year alone, 5,800 Somalis have applied for asylum.


"Our country has become safer, we are no longer a country of civil war," said Sheikh Mohamud in an interview with BILD before his visit to the Chancellor. Yes, we are still fighting against the terrorist militias al-Shabaab and IS, "but we have pushed them back," said the President. "We are no longer the country of 'Black Hawk Down' " - referring to the film (2001) about the Battle of Mogadishu 31 years ago. "This film, the terrorist attacks and the images of our fishermen who became pirates have shaped the image of our country abroad. But that is behind us."

He wants to: "Attract investors, especially from Germany. We are safe, we secure investments. We have natural resources, we have large agricultural areas and we have the best fishing grounds, especially for tuna. We need trust and investment - not just development funds."

Sheikh Mohamud voted for Ukraine in the UN, persuaded China to withdraw its illegal fishing fleets and dutifully buy licenses from the state. He says of Russia: "We strive for relations with all states, Russia has forgiven us hundreds of millions of dollars of national debt." But Mohamud has rejected extensive military aid - in other words mercenaries.

The African Union peacekeeping troops have withdrawn. "We have now taken over the matter ourselves. We are the masters of the house again. The electoral system is being changed - from a clan system to 'one citizen - one vote'."

His goal: "We must once again become a home for our citizens. Also for those who live in Germany. Each of them has a home: Somalia. They can all go back there - no problem."

In Germany it's nearly impossible to send someone back, let alone someone with refugee status. These people are extremely strict on their legal system.
They may be able to send back a few hundred criminals.
To send even a criminal back to their country costs for Germany a lot of money. The state has to fight an endless costly legal and media battles and may not even succeed.

There are tens of thousands of people without any resident status or permit staying in the country for at least 1.5 decades and most of these people are from Eastern Europe, Asia, West Africa, North Africa and the Latin America. They've something called Duldung for decades. Some of them don't even have working permit and the state has been paying their rent, health insurance, education, childcare, pension and monthly allowance for years. They could allow them work and not be a burden, but that goes against the rules, so Germans decided it's much better to let them enjoy free stuff for decades.
