I had to make a thread on this since all I wrote won't allow me to post on messages to @Daydreamer.

If you want to learn about the Adal empire and the period in the horn around the early half of the 1500s. Read Futuh Al habash. It's a first hand account of Ahmad Gureys conquest of Ethiopia.

A majority of Somali history is found in Arabic texts so find your way into Somali history spaces like the "Culture & history" sub forum and on twitter where people translate these sources.

There are also two books made by British authors,
"Somali" by IM Lewis & "Warriors: Life and Death among the Somalis" by Gerald Hanley.

These two books have lots of important information but you have to also Understand these two people are English orientalists.

They try reduce alot of Somali history and especially IM Lewis who was denied access to manuscripts held by somali families because they didn't trust a Gaal, so he just chalked everything up to Arabs.

The reason you search up who built Mogadishu and it says Arab traders is because of figures like IM Lewis writing that down as cope. Nonetheless, you can still read them for good insight in certain topics.

I have so many different sources and will start making many threads on the culture and history section with links & such to help others dive into somali history inshallah.

You know history from books, but I know oral history and Somali poetry From sitting with some elderly people
which is more important than books written by non-Somali people about Somalis.

Do you have pdf for Warriors: Life and Death among the Somalis" by Gerald Hanley?

I hope that you will create a topic about Somali architecture. I mean, there is Arab and Western architecture. I heard that we have Somali-Swahili architecture, so I want you to delve into it.

I'll definitely do so sxb

Somali Penisula was huge so ig you can find many different types. The bleached coral cities of the Benadir are most beautiful.

Somalis also built with stone, even small settlements in the middle of Galbeed use stone. This is actually a blessing to us since unlike other Africans who but using mud bricks and such which deteriorated into nothing, we Somalis can dig these stone structures back up. This is why I say when Somalia stabilise we must invest a ton into archeology, even if it must be funded by a group of interested Somalis rather than government.

Not yet I'll be looking for them. I already bought a physical copy of Somali by IM Lewis from amazon though.

He's right about Mogadishu being found by Arabs but he didn't mention the Himyari's , which makes sense since he probably wasn't allowed access to ancient manuscripts and they probably just gave him a brief answer.

If you're interested in somali architecture try checking this thread i'm sure you'll find it interesting.

What i find fascinating and intriguing is the door design. Some are basic such as this one.

Others are elaborate and beautiful such as these.

Mashallah very beautiful.

Somalia should rebuild in these styles and create cities based on modern interpretations of old architecture.

I wish to see a large Mosque in Mogadishu akin to Hagia Sofia built in a somali style that will be a centre piece of the country.

No we don't need one like Hagia Sofia, There's no point spending extraordinary amount of money on unnecessary architecture, masjids should be built in a simple manner, they're for worshipping Allah and seeking knowledge not for decoration or tourism ,otherwise it becomes israaf. All that money could instead be used on feeding the poor or building or enhancing other masajid
