I have a confession to make.
The reason I don't take offense when somalilanders and other reer waqooyi tribes talk smack about reer konfur is because deep down, I feel ashamed of some of my relatives and their active participation in the Issaq genocide. You see, some of my grandfathers worked closely with Siad Barre, unfortunately.
Although I'm happy to ran into a fellow somali, a part of me gets anxious if they are reer waqooyi. I think, I hope they don't resent me for what my relatives did. They'll be justified to but I just hope they don't.
I've had fellow reer konfur chastise me saying "Naya dhig malihid miyaa?!" What dhig? You mean the dhig my ancestors spilled in thousands? One even told me I have "the somali version of white guilt" and to quit it because technically, I didn't kill any isaaq person.
However, for true reconciliation to happen, we, the descendants of the people who were involved in this massacre, should at least acknowledge that it was horrible, and are deeply ashamed and apologetic for what our relatives did to Isaaqs and other waqooyi tribes who were affected.
