f*ck u id22r trying to redefine what a genocide legally means and it's the killing of an unarmed and non fighting force, when the hell do snm thugs and their helpers fit that criteria? Waryaa take your fuckin somali woke history to Villa somalia it's seen as rubbish by Darods.

Siad Barre both used and turned on the isaaq. He used isaaq officers and soldiers to fight the SSDF throughout 83-84, whilst using his own loyal MOD troops to xasuuq their kin in waqooyi.

pumped and dumped

This kid @Itsnotthateasy is just ranting and raving his snm mythologies while each point debunked and he responds with more ranting and raving like they do about their fictional nation it's exactly the same about SNM. That's why I hate debating Isaaq your debating their madness even after each point they raise is convincly shown to be false.

I am Darod u won't sell that shit to me

Here's the difference, Somalia is fiction that's why no one fights for it.
Somaliland is reality and the history is real and that's why we fight.
The proof is in the pudding.

You will believe sooner or later because you won't escape from it.

It's timing is on the heels of an L for their project to dismantle Somaliland. So they reopen the case of the genocide, these fools are totally predictable at this point.
Already been dismantled, you've lost a huge chunk of territory and you have foreign troops from PL occupying you. Your 'army' is in complete tatters as well.

In Isaaqs minds and all irir clans they see me like this about my political idealogy. Yes your all right this is my political inspiration who created a state out of stateless vacuum and not only that adapted to the real world conditions facing Somalis post 91 not live in some delusional 1960 mindset.

HA Activist.
Can't be 'genocide' anyway cause you are talking about the same ethnic group. How do you even prove who the people that were killed were? Even dna wouldn't be able to prove that since it's all basically the same anyway. Maybe a new term such as 'qabiloside' is needed? Either way it's clearly massively overblown

Yoohoo, u got a real nice “GOTCHA!” moment right here.

The only mistake Abdullahi Yusuf did is accept Carta irirism 4.5 and accept Marehan threats to get more share then their worth in darod allocation. The other one is allowing sacad back into the g town, the other was creating Galmudug for them in Baraxley.

But in all fairness to him, the man wanted to change the chapter of his SSDF legacy and inspiring all the rebel movements and be remembered for something positive which he is like PL and the SFG in Mogadishu. Some say he had pressures facing him from terrorism and hagnimo and irirism and he needed to concede some areas in order get thru his legacy the positive side. In all fairness the harm he did by creating rebel movements and then cleaning up later will balance him to zero but zero is better then being in the negatives like other Somali leaders. 😂

The hawiye are nothing like him, they boast in their failures and some even resort to playing the obstacle role on other clans because their clan is so fucked up in terms of leadership quality. They don't change the chapter either and leave behind nothing but looting Iyo dhuuso ambuulo.

Noone is ignoring Isaaq role but seriously grown adults and educated don't waste much time on them, their usually entertained by younger kids who lack experience. The reason is these dudes wanna go back to 1880 and 1960 period, their leaders didn't adapt to the conditions facing Somalia post 91.

That's kinda like Makhir or Majerteniya sultanate being revived including hobyo sultanate and arguing their union into the south or north was not thru popular will but thru violence in majerten case and sacking in makhir case unlike Isaaq union was thru popular will.

But we have rational leaders thank god who knew what we were facing post 90s and evolved and adjusted their political solution. Imagine warsangelis running around restoring makhir borders and Majertens running around attacking habar gedirs in hobyo and galgaduud when we know those borders don't exist anymore and we must face the reality we are in today.

Isaaqs are usually to the educated among us more for shit n giggles and comedy noone takes them serious for those above reason they really are majnuun.

Somalia died more than thirty years ago when the cold war ended. Ancient history.

The confederation attempt just failed and all you have is a few garrison cities under African protection in a sea of extremists and warring clans. And even confederating those garrison cities failed.
There's no president, no constitution, no state, no federal member states.
Go listen to the UNSC situation report it's describing a pure fantasy but because it's an official organization people delude themselves.
These fantasies end when the money and the support is removed and all the reality becomes clear for all to see.
They use words like key stakeholders, broad based consensus, elections, - it would be funny if it wasn't a tragic situation.

To be fair the hype around oil and UNSC membership, fake elections will keep you entertained for a while yet until the bitter reality eventually emerges.

Heck imagine being a careless leader like Isaaq and Dhulbahantes were told to run around restoring darawish borders even in EYL, same with Makhir, same with Majerteniya and hobyo galgaduud and south mudug, imagine we had careless leaders who said go and do that, you think these isaaqs are any different infact their more credibility with darawish, mj, warsangeli since their mamul was forcefully sacked, unlike Isaaq which was the will of their ppl.

Hartigu waa dawlad sayid even said it @TekNiKo

Sade hates this show of force and loves to fuel division.

AUN GEN Abdullahi Yusuf, saviour of the nation. Noble vision he had but all those resources expended in xamar building a government for people who viewed him as a sworn enemy, when we should’ve been focusing on our deegan and local neighbours….

Genocide doesn't need to has certain threshold to viewed as genocide. And it can be based on either ethnic lines, race, language, or clan.

The legal term “genocide” refers to certain acts committed with the intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group. Genocide is an international crime, according to the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (1948). The acts that constitute genocide fall into five categories:

  • Killing members of the group
  • Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group
  • Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction, in whole or in part
  • Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group
  • Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group
Yes, the attacks by the Somali National Army (SNA) on the Isaaq population, particularly between 1987 and 1989, have widely been classified as genocide by several human rights organizations, scholars, and international observers. The events are commonly referred to as the "Isaaq Genocide," which included systematic mass killings, targeted bombings, torture, and other atrocities committed primarily against the Isaaq clan in northern Somalia (now Somaliland). Here are the key reasons why these attacks are classified as genocide:

1. Intent to Destroy, in Whole or in Part, a Specific Group

  • Genocide, as defined by the United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, involves acts committed with the intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial, or religious group. Evidence suggests that the Somali government under Siad Barre systematically targeted the Isaaq clan due to their support for the Somali National Movement (SNM) and their perceived opposition to Barre's regime.
  • The scale and intensity of violence directed specifically at the Isaaq population—who were labeled as "enemies" of the state—suggest an intent to punish or eradicate the group, meeting the criteria for genocide.

2. Systematic Mass Killings and Bombing Campaigns

  • The SNA, alongside government-backed militias, conducted large-scale killings in Isaaq-majority cities such as Hargeisa and Burao. In 1988, government forces launched aerial bombings, artillery attacks, and other assaults on these cities, resulting in tens of thousands of civilian casualties and the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Isaaq people.
  • Hargeisa was almost completely destroyed, earning it the label "Africa's Hiroshima" due to the sheer devastation and loss of civilian life. The destruction of these urban centers specifically targeted areas predominantly inhabited by the Isaaq clan.

3. Use of Torture, Detention, and Execution

  • The Somali government engaged in arbitrary arrests, torture, and summary executions of Isaaq people, targeting community leaders, intellectuals, and anyone suspected of having ties to the SNM or simply for being of Isaaq descent.
  • Mass graves have been uncovered in Somaliland, revealing evidence of systematic execution of civilians, further supporting the classification of these actions as genocide. Human rights organizations have documented these atrocities, describing them as a deliberate attempt to dismantle Isaaq society and eliminate its members.

4. Forced Displacement and Famine

  • The violence forced hundreds of thousands of Isaaq people to flee to Ethiopia and other regions, creating a humanitarian crisis. Those who remained faced severe food shortages, restricted movement, and deliberate deprivation policies that blocked aid from reaching Isaaq areas.
  • The forced displacement, combined with destruction of infrastructure and agricultural resources, led to widespread starvation and suffering, part of a broader strategy to weaken the Isaaq community.

5. Ethnic Targeting and Propaganda

  • The Barre regime used propaganda to label the Isaaq as "traitors" and "anti-national elements," fostering an environment of hostility that justified attacks on Isaaq civilians. This targeting of the Isaaq population based on ethnic affiliation aligns with genocidal intent, as it sought to vilify and dehumanize an entire group.

6. International Recognition and Legal Implications

  • Numerous reports by Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and other international organizations have characterized the atrocities committed against the Isaaq as genocide or crimes against humanity. Somaliland’s government has also made efforts to seek international recognition of these events as genocide.
  • Mass grave excavations, testimonies from survivors, and documented evidence of state-planned attacks have been used to substantiate claims of genocide, even though no formal international tribunal has yet prosecuted these crimes.

7. Aftermath and Continued Recognition

  • The destruction and trauma experienced by the Isaaq community have had lasting effects, which contribute to the continued push for recognition of the genocide. Since the fall of Siad Barre's government, Somaliland has engaged in a process of documentation and memorialization to ensure that these atrocities are recognized as genocide.
In conclusion, the systematic and targeted nature of the SNA’s attacks on the Isaaq people, combined with the widespread evidence of intent to destroy the group, has led to the classification of these events as genocide. The violence inflicted upon the Isaaq community was not only intended to suppress a political insurgency but also to eradicate the Isaaq as a social and cultural entity, thereby meeting the international definition of genocide.

It's funny that the publisher of this article would think opening this topic will bring anything other than insults and old grievances.

Most people who witness these events and took part in the civil war are dead and I don't think they are happy in their graves so we should learn form their mistakes not following their path.

AUN to all who died in these conflicts.
