The word you are looking for is close and is sovereign. In which case you are correct about some of your statements. But the word sovereign while being a synonym still has a different underlying meaning but is compatible with word country. Learn the difference..
Also you talk about international backing and it's laughable if you think that is the reason why Somaliland is not recognized. The international community doesn't give a f about Somalia sovereignty it is violated everyday.
The reason why the international community doesn't recognize SL is because they are afraid of further sparking separatist movement throughout not only east but all of Africa.
Let me tell you what does have backing from the international law, the legal claim which Somaliland has but cannot use. This is why Somalia will never bring SL to international court because then we can use those claims. It would be bad news for Somalia if a international court accidentally recognized Somaliland.
The legal claim Somaliland has is backed up by many conventions done even before Somalia got its independence. Somaliland claim is unique among all other unrecognized states. Showing us that having legal claim doesn't mean everything. It just helps in case.
