@EternalLightX the figures for FGM and many other indicators in Somalia are out of date due to instability but i remember a recent in-depth report (over 9000 households questioned) into how many girls got mutilated in somaliland and puntland showed that there was a 75% decrease in all forms of the practice. Now obviously so long as people are still suffering from this in SL/pl they should still continue to educate the rural women and not be complacent till it's eradicated.

In the west it's very unlikely due to tougher actions most of the diasporas haven't had it done due to education and parents being less reluctant as a result of the likelihood they will end up in jail. It's the young girls in Somalia who are still exposed to this nonsense

Many mothers don't want it done. I've seen it both ways, and it's ultimately important so the girl will have marriage prospects to a man, and be considered chaste, adhering to normative attitudes. This isn't coming from a vacuum.
