They have a strange fixation on anything which is a tomb from my understanding. Pyramids were a tomb/cemetery complex so it should be raised to the ground according to them.

I think you only mean the pyramids, and apart from them, Egypt was filled with hundreds if not thousands of temples and artifices, from the average looking ones to the giants massive statues. The sphinx was always there, but not touched. So why the pyramid incident was the only one?

The Sphinx was covered by the sand and it’s well known, plenty of pictures showing the excavation done by the Brits. When you walk out those sites, you will notice how steep the ground is so what does that tells you?
