Your mom connecting you with lighter women is a clear example of that. In Somalia even women bleach to get a higher chance at marriage. More men will be interested in them. Ofc I’m against skin bleaching, but watching videos helped me understand why they do it. There is even a saying in Somalia that only darker skin and night time is dumb. Basically insinuating dark skin is bad. It upsets me. I even see diaspora somali men being influenced by this saying they want to marry a lighter skinned somali women back home. They never go for women their own colour or darker.

I agree ! People don’t believe me when I say being light skin you get chosen real quick! But they always tell me it’s Calaaf and Qadr which I agree but I always wonder how all of the light skin girls I know are getting married and some even going for a second marriage! As a dark skin girl I would get told your pretty for a dark skin girl! Or you have « jiniyaad ; not sure if I wrote well » but they would never tell me out right am beautiful like my light friends I always thought it was weird. You know the irony of all of this I would always get hit on my cadaan men looool like always! And Ofcourse madow men but never Somali men. Anyways, to conclude you better only have eyes, nose, and a mouth if your dark skin! No flaws in order to be deemed beautiful! It’s sad but whatever…..

If you go to Kenya you will only see light skinned Somali women. Only the men still have their natural skin color . The men are also starting to bleach , I think after 20 years there will be no dark skinned Somalis left in Kenya .

I thought I was the only one who notices this, every single time I go to nairobi all the somalis I see look borderline mixed.
