Somalia Soil Map

Video doesn’t say location but comments say it’s somewhere outside Garowee. This guy went to study agriculture in Turkey came back home and put knowledge to work

One thing he should do is apply holisitic management , he can turn the whole area into thicker grassland by doing plan grassing with the cattle

Keep them in one area let them poop etc and then move them to another etc. You fertilize the soil and give it time to recover by not overgrazing it.

FAO providing grass seeds, goal is to have livestock enclosed to certain areas and limit them having to travel far and also dying when droughts hit. Place is inhospitable harsh land but as technology improves hopefully improves peoples lives

It would be interesting if Puntland closed off 50 hectares of land in each district to see what each area would like like without grazing. You could learn a lot from such a reserve about what the natural state of the area is.

Kismayo for example has dark orange which in the legend equals cambisol. The CM I believe also indicates that
What side of Kismayo are you talking about
North may is dark soil , near the river Gobweyn
Cost is bacaad beach sand
West and south of Kismayo is Red San
Best farm land in Somalia is Dhasheeg Waamo and Joore Badhadhe are area

@Hilmaam great topic and series of posts.

The good soil in percentage terms what are the figures for the entire country? based on the soil map? I see figures of 5-10% often quoted, with the very best soil being quoted as a mere 5% around river basins.

If the 5% is true this is not enough to feed the country even if we adopted the most modern techniques, just the cold storage energy demands and cost makes this unprofitable, and the logistical challenges due to poor infrastructure adds to it. (the curse of having the highest energy prices in the world)

But even in a ideal scenario were both issues are resolved (energy/infrastructure) and everything maximised, it leaves very little for export if those figures are true.

I am hoping you are able to debunk the 5% figure, otherwise we are really screwed as nation

5% of Somalia is around 32.000 km2. The whole of the Netherlands is 41.000 km2(being densely populated) and it is the second largest food exporter in the world after the usa.

I’ve heard around 13% it’s very rough number. A lot more studies need to be done a lot of the data is old and not nearly enough samples since collapse

most of the arable land is around the rivers. We can increase farming potential with irrigation and things like dams. The south can feed rest of country but it’s the most chaotic part of Somalia .
