Amerindian languages were not allowed to be taught in American schools for a very long time. The slaves from Africa came from separate regions and were not able to speak to each other in African languages. And those European migrants voluntarily started speaking English for social mobility reasons.

Why would a Persian switch to Arabic when he can survive perfectly in Persian? Incentives are completely different.

In the early days, WASP culture was the dominant/standard culture and the vast majority of immigrants entering the country were fellow Whites (Italians & Germans) that assimilated into the mainstream English-speaking culture led by English-Americans; although to a certain extent "Americanisation" was forced onto the White immigrants, especially the Germans in the wake of WW1.
