"home care, social workers, retail/service, education/teaching, interpreter work, construction, manual labor(carpenters, builders), public sector or non-profit or are employed in small businesses and then you have a few working in IT and information services which is growing especially as more younger people are joining this group"
Like 99% of this group you mentioned are millennials that went to school in the states. Im not expecting any of these young somalis to be receiving government benefits.
I was mainly referring to the gen X somalis that raised most of us here in america. Most fathers were taxi and Uber drivers. A lot of them are still working too and are making less than 40k a year.
Our household income jumped to 50k mainly because millennials enter the workforce which is a good thing.
emphasis on the word refugee most vietnamese people in the states despite the war are still economic and even then they still had access to education back in vietnam. I think you need to understand somalis come from the worst circumstances a human being can come from literally. War, nomad culture, no written script until 1970, severly isolated. Im hard on somalis but what i wont do is compare it to other communities without understanding why. Somalis also suffer from horrible or no parenting. No, were not. Stop the cope. Most Somalis settled to the US in the 90s-Early 2000s at the latest. 20-30 years is enough time to pay off a mortgage and own property, Somalis are still disproportionally reliant on government aid in the US.
Vietnamese people came into the US during the 70s and 80s as refigees and are now either at the median or above the median income. Do you think this will happen to Somalis within the next decade?
You're correct. The Somalis who arrived in the early '90s are just now seeing some of their oldest children graduate and enter the workforce. My parents immigrated here in the early '90s; I’m their oldest child and I'm just three years out of university, similar to most of my peers whose parents came during that time. Peak earning years for college graduates in America doesn't even begin until age 35 or later. Our household income is about to be 80k+ probably within the next 20 years . All the oldheads will be retired by then. The only niggas that will hold us back will be the dumb ass niggas that didn't go to college or trade school.
I rembe it was thus one african dude who posted these stats to show hoe sucessful africans are and then he also used it to shit on somalis and was like why are they so poor yet so arrogant. I was low-key thinking is this nigga retarded since he posts a bunch of stats yet didn't mention anything about how selected african immigrants are. You're correct. Another factor they failed to consider, In Minnesota, half of the Somali population is below the age of 22, so those currently working are disproportionately first-generation refugees doing unskilled jobs like Uber, truck driving, running local halal shops, daycares, etc.
This is why it's best to look into the context of the statistics your viewing. Otherwise you'll end up like the nigga above whose comparing the household incomes of first-generation refugees to those of economic immigrants, who represent the college-educated and skilled workers from their home countries.

This is an article from 2007.
Rochester, Minn. / Many Somalis getting off welfare
Abdifatah Abdinur spoke no English when his family immigrated here in 1995, but he can still remember how embarrassed he was at needing food stamps. “Somali men and women like to be independe…www.twincities.com

How can Somalis be less reliant on welfare and have greater food security than Black Americans and Hispanics but earn less than them?
What it means in reality is that Somalis have more wealth that is not accounted for.
like food processing, home care, social workers, retail/service, education/teaching, interpreter work, construction, manual labor(carpenters, builders), public sector or non-profit or are employed in small businesses and then you have a few working in IT and information services which is growing especially as more younger people are joining this group. They don't just work in transportation delivery driver, taxi or trucking etc. I know you love typecasting Somalis with this to diminish them with. It just shows Somalis are willing to pick any type of work.
taxi drivers etc, I'm tempted to go over to the US but can'tt handle the police bs, even though the pay would 3 to 4x my income, it's not worth the risk. Most Somalis do not report their full income, they refuse to pay tax.
Police? Just mind your business nobody will do anything to youtaxi drivers etc, I'm tempted to go over to the US but can'tt handle the police bs, even though the pay would 3 to 4x my income, it's not worth the risk.
Your just happy cause of the embarrassment that is the UK diaspora living 75% in Qaxooti Housing after 40 yearsThis is why it makes me laugh when Somali people do diaspora wars. We genuinely don’t have a single successful diaspora in the West. We don’t even have one that’s average performing.
Why are you such an argumentative person? You missed my general point and instead cherry-picked specific sentences to refute. I’m not talking about welfare statistics or labor force participation rates at all!The article and studies that i showed are from 2007 and they are talking about Somalis that arrived back in 1995.
So no it's not the kids that grew up, graduated and just started to enter the work force.
The 16-24 age group have a lower employment 2 in 5 (40%) (Based on 2018 stats) than the 25-64 age range which are mostly refugee Somalis who have an employment rate of 85%.
Not all jobs are created equal, a lot of the jobs you listed don't require a college degree and have lower barriers to entry. They are therefore capped in their income potential. I'm not pigeonholing Somalis, I just mentioned the few jobs I did as examples of unskilled fields that don't require higher education. Meant nothing derogatory by it even though you took it that way.And most of what i mentioned except for IT and information services which are fewer are not really something you need more higher tier education to be employed in.
With a significant portion of them actually being employed in the home care health services and food manufacturing industry and decent percentage also being self employed.

So no it's not a bunch of Somalis employed in uber, halal, truck driving or daycare and taxis loool. Way to pigeonhole Somalis who actually have varied sector labor profile, they take any job.
You got me.Your just happy cause of the embarrassment that is the UK diaspora living 75% in Qaxooti Housing after 40 years
Hating ass niggaThis is why it makes me laugh when Somali people do diaspora wars. We genuinely don’t have a single successful diaspora in the West. We don’t even have one that’s average performing.
Minnesota is still doing better by a landslide sxb. What even goes on in the UK Somali community? You got me.

My reply was meant to highlight that the future income potential of Somalis is extremely high, as half of our population is below college-graduate age. It was an explanation for why we're trailing behind the other high income African immigrant groups in the chart such as Kenyans or South Africans who are primarily economic migrants.

most of us did not come here in the 90s/early 2000s. The somali population in america really boomed after 2010. I don't even remember seeing very many somalis in the early 2000sNo, were not.
