It doesn't really have anything to do with resources but the potential threat Somalia poses to the powers that be thanks to its strategic location.

This has been known for ages. I always wondered why the hell they were so hellbent on this other than wanting to loot our resources cos that point didn't 100% add up. Other than our marine resources and maybe some uranium they really don't loot all that much from Somalia, for example. Then it hit me.

It's about Israel. It's basically about making sure no wealthy, developed and strong states not subservient to the West exist around their little settled colonialist project that can then threaten its existence.

But then the looting is in there too and just generally seeing our block of nations as a threat to their global economic and political order if we're not willing to be their boys like the Khaleejis were for much of the last 30+ years.

Egypt sending troops by air and sea for new African Union force in Somalia

UN green light for deployment against Al Shabab lends international legitimacy to Cairo's military presence in the Horn of Africa nation.

Egypt is beefing up its military presence in Somalia to take part in a new African Union mission to fight the terrorist group Al Shabab, ferrying troops there by sea and air in what sources and analysts say is a significant step in Cairo's efforts to broaden its footprint in the strategic Horn of Africa region.

It is not clear whether the Egyptian troops already in Somalia will be part of the new mission or will operate separately while those being sent by Cairo at present will alone serve in the AU mission.

The sources said last week's UN Security Council resolution was received with relief in Cairo, ending a period of concern that Turkey's announcement of a mediation bid between Somalia and Ethiopia in December would change Mogadishu's mind about replacing the Ethiopians with the Egyptians.

I don't think he could stop it. Since January, US said no one can remove Ethiopian troops, their line never changed in May and June in the UN they said no changes to troop contributors. I didn't believe it would run no matter what HSM wanted. HSM had some success convincing AU that Somalia should choose troop contributors but it will come down the major sponsors in the end and their wishes.

It wouldn't surprise me if this turned out to be true hsm is spineless. But I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and see what offcial announcements come out over the next day . But considering some ethiopian govt officials arrived yesterday in somalia to discuss something with the fgs its definitely possible.
