Ethiopia to secure a port through negotiation or force

So Ceel macaan will be main Mogadishu/SFG port? It will need to be moved eventually. No room for expansion as current port is right in the middle of the city
These are ports to be rented to foreign companies/ counties like Ethiopia,UAE, Egypt bc Mogadishu port is not for rent . I think Marko will go for Ethiopia and the Ethiopian troops will have a base in there.

While we sit here repeating this is unacceptable, our leaders back home are arguing about which port they will give to Ethiopia. “Maya Maya adigu UAE baa lashaqeysaa, we want Ethiopia here, adigu Kenya baad wax la cuntaa, we want Ethiopia!” *Argument/debate will continue until one clan signs a deal with the Amharas and Ethiopia gets it’s port* :mjlaugh:

No Zoo is giving a port to Amxaar.

Stupid move from the goverment if they allow Ethiopia to go anywhere near our ports. Being landlocked is one of their weaknesses that we should always use against them

Suprised that they say 95% of Ethiopia exports and imports come through Djibouti. Rest is port Sudan and berbera. Seems hard to believe other somali ports missing out this much. Documentary also says they offered Eritrea 30% of Ethiopian airlines for direct access to port. Djibouti 1 million people in poverty look at insane money they making from ports alone. Then add military bases, fishing and they should be way ahead of where they are

This is nail in coffin in why Djibouti gets so much of the business. Train is able to transport 3500 tons of cargo in 10 hours. This would take 70 trucks 3-4 days

It's not surprising tho. Eritrean ports of Masawa and Assab were Ethiopia's main ports until the 90s. Even after Eritrea's independence until the Eri-Eth conflict in late 90s. By then Eritrea handled 2/3 of Ethiopia's import and export.

Following the conflict, they had to switch really quick. Somalia was in a civil war and could not offer any meaningful service. Sudan and Kenya far away. Djibouti was the closest, and had an existing railway Djibouti - Dir Dhaba - Addis, though very outdated. Over the next decades, Eri-Eth never ended their conflict and Ethiopia invaded Somalia, their two neighbouring countries became their foes.

Djibouti, a neutral and stable country, became the optimal location where they would choose to invest in upgrading the infrastructure, especially the railway. Also, it already had the advantage over the previous road transportation from Eritrea, since the transportation were quicker by rail. So, it all made sense.

It makes sense that way. still shocking to me somaliland and puntland spending all that money on ports and have less than 5% market share they are competing with Sudan 🤯 to show for it

Disrepair on the Addis Ababa-Djibouti trade corridor, which handles 95 percent of Ethiopia’s trade, is costing drivers hundreds of thousands of birr in repairs and endangering lives, according to a new study.

Despite contributing significantly to both countries’ economies, the longest Ethiopia-Djibouti trade corridor faces ongoing issues that continue to irate businesses.
The Ethiopian Logistics Sectoral Association survey released Thursday chronicles chassis fractured, suspensions shattered, vehicle chassis, suspensions, shocks, tires, dashboards and truck bodies severely damaged from road defects.

Parking shortages and road safety concerns also plague drivers. Most said dealing with infrastructure challenges and security risks is common. Breakdowns cost truckers 200,000-600,000 birr to relocate vehicles and goods, drivers said, due to expensive cost of local technicians.

Poor road conditions caused back pain, kidney failure and breathing issues, according to the study. Drivers cited horrific murders, illegal inspections, harassment by border authorities and residents, and needless stops as major problems.

Over 85 percent called the Galafi to Dikil stretch in horrible shape. 15 percent said Galafi to Dire Dawa Turn-off is rapidly deteriorating. Vehicle maintenance costs have surged from poor roads, raising logistics costs.

Officials of the Association expressed concerns that drivers may soon be unable to work, disrupting supply chains and deterring business, given the severe safety issues and hazardous conditions.

Businessman Tsedeke Yihune (Eng.) cited huge logistics costs importing through Djibouti. He says the claims that shipping from China to Djibouti was one-third of the total cost, with the rest from Djibouti to Addis Ababa, was erroneous.

Dereje Largesse of the Transport Employers Federation said poor roads significantly increased maintaining 12,000+ trucks. He decried the safety risks and neglect, urging officials to address bureaucracy hindering business.

“It is particularly concerning to see the driver’s safety put at risk and road safety neglected,” he said, calling on Ethiopian and Djiboutian officials to streamline unnecessary bureaucracy that hinders the business climate.

The Association urged the government to prioritize the trade corridors and safety, noting they are points of entry for most imports and exports. It requested adequate funding to maintain excellent road conditions.

Despite reforms under Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD), Ethiopia continues to face poor trade logistics and difficulties improving its business environment. As a result, the country’s global trade remains low due to supply and demand constraints.

A new USD 730 million International Development Association (IDA) grant aims to significantly upgrade the Addis Ababa- Djibouti corridor as part of the Horn of Africa Initiative’s Regional Economic Corridor Project.

The project will improve the route between Ethiopia and Djibouti, particularly the section between Mieso and Dire Dawa, to shorten travel times, boost safety, cut costs and reduce pollution. As Ethiopia seeks to diversify its ports, the corridor currently handles around 95 percent of the country’s trade.

To be fair, Berbera port has yet to be finished. I think it will happen by 2025. SL have upgraded the roads Berbera-Hargaysa-Wajaale and DDS/Ethiopia have also done their share Wajaale-Jigjiga and Jigjiga-Dir Dhaba (a new road not through Harar, but through Sitti), Jigjiga-Djibouti and then other roads like Baabile-Fiq and several others throughout the region to make it more accessible. Even the Wajaale-Jigjiga road will undergo further enlargement. The same is happening in PL-DDS with the GGG roads in PL and on the side in DDS as you know.

All in all, with more infrastructure in place, trade will naturally increase. Don't forget that the ports of the other countries are much larger, which accommodates a larger population and thus makes sense that they have a larger market share. But it will change soon.

Edit: Here are four lane roads (which are rare and only exist in highways in Eth) being upgraded in eastern Faafan. I highly doubt that they would build roads this wide, if it wasn't meant to increase the trade of goods through SL/Somalia.

All this money go to the fat guy who is the president Djibouti 😂

Oh yeah I heard the old man is sick and may have dementia

Nothing to do with age, she just yields a lot of power. It's well known that she has a say in the discourse of the country.

Djibouti needs to get rid of the mafias who are holding the country hostage #FreeDjibouti :ohlord:

You're acting like Somaliland is relevant in the grand scheme of things. Ethiopia already owns 30% of Berbera. Somaliland federal state cannot defy them when Ethiopia got it on lock.
Lol you have no clue what you’re on about.58,5% for DP World 6,5% for British International Investment (the government investment arm of the UK government) 35% for Somaliland. The Ethiopian lost their 19% since they couldn't fulfill their part of the agreement because they were busy massacring tigrayans.
