Never. But economic integration is good for the region. They have 120m+ population and growing economy, their shipping needs are gonna grow. Every developing economy needs cheap Chinese goods. I understand Abiy though, it's depressing for them to never reach their full potential cause they have to pay multiple neighboring countries for their needs. Not just import fees, but even taxes on the roads. We thrive from their misfortune.

Djibouti is not actually taxing Ethiopian goods but make them pay port handling fees for discharging and handling their cargo which is different, no port service is for free worldwide and Ethiopia will still have to pay the same either they go to Berbera, Assab or Kenya.

Now the problem is that Ethiopia is short on forex and can't afford to spend billions of dollars each year on these services, they have proposed several time Djibouti to pay them in birr , which of course has been rejected.

Main reason they are so desperate is to save the forex draining they are facing now.

Seems like it’ll only get worse as Ethiopia’s imports rise.

They don’t produce anything of note so this’ll create pressure on their currency for the foreseeable future.

Ethiopia will have no success convincing Djibouti to do them a favour as Djibouti is completely reliant on their port for income.
