The existence of an independent Isaaq or Dir Woqoyi Somaliland would be an existential threat for Somalia. It does this in two ways:

1. It gives clans the idea that clan based secession is possible and can be resorted to.
2. It reduces Somalia to a state rather than being the nation-state of all Somalis.

What Somalia must do is run out the clock. In 10 to 15 year's time, Isaaq will have <50% of the population of what used to be British Somaliland. If we manage to delay recognition of their secession until that point is crossed, we can then request a referendum that we know northern unionists can win. Secession is not a foregone conclusion, we can help make it fail.
