5000 euro mahr? too much?

As if refugees could afford to pay that much. Who are you kidding? :russ: :hahaidiot:

:mjlol:

Everybody's a cynic.

We actually do pay that much... after many, many years of saving up. Brothers and cousins chip in as well to help you reach the amount.

Here's a source on what South Sudanese in Australia pay.

This wedding is bringing together a couple from the Dinka community. Dinka and Nuer are two of the largest ethnic groups in South Sudan, and traditionally the dowries they pay are the highest - the price for a bride can now reach as much as $80,000. Once paid in cattle, the amount is now usually exchanged in cash.

We have received $55,000 and there is an outstanding $15,000. But Chief Bol, we’re not settled yet...Why don’t you give us a specific time when you will bring the remaining money?” says Mach Panchol, one of the negotiators representing the bride’s family.

In the community hall in Dandenong, a price of $70 000 is agreed upon and the wedding celebrations can get underway. Ajah and Chol arrive - he lifts her veil and takes her hand to the cheers of their extended families. The dancefloor erupts.

The less the mahr, the more she loves you. If she donates all of the mahr to charity, she really loves you. I have heard of this done before.

That would be cheap for us.

You guys are lucky that 5k in Euros could even be conceived as exorbitant in Somali marriages. Try 58K in U.S. dollars.
Lol It’s not considered exorbitant by most Somalis just by the little broke kids on this site. Most Somali men spend around 20-40k alone on weddings plus another 10-15k on home furnishings

Like I said, there is no way a refugee in the west that fled their hometown without a penny to their name is able to afford that much money as a dowry. It seems you are basing it off the fact that a nomad in South Sudan can pay 100 cows as dowry in marriage, and converting that figure into USD dollars. Somali nomads pay 100 camels in mehr too, but that doesn’t mean Somalis in the west spend $80,000 as well. Most South Sudanese and Somalis in the west are poor and live in rough neighbourhoods, they can’t fork out that much money.

I didn't convert anything to get to a figure.

Did you even bother to read the article showing South Sudanese men paying 70k, in cash?

But exactly how many of them are routinely saving up 75k dowries on the regular? What do you guys spend on the wedding and who pays for it?

A great deal of us do in fact pay that amount, and it may take 10 years to achieve, but we'll commit to it because South Sudanese are obsessed with marriage.

As a South Sudanese man... brothers and cousins are expected to help you get there, and you'll receive assistance from your two bloodlines -- paternal and maternal.

One of my sisters (second oldest) was married for close to 80k AUD.

My first cousin is still in the process of paying off his dowry after we paid 45k AUD.

Wow. I bet divorce rates are very low. I mean that’s a lot of investment. I’m not sure why but Somalis moved away from traditions and norms regarding marriage. Nowadays it’s up to the girl and most choose something small or sometimes even the holy book Quran for their dowry because they think that will get them to heaven. So often the men now often view marriage as something cheap, easy and disposable. They’ll marry one woman today and move on to the next. As you can see here even the younger men on this site have this same attitude because it’s been normalized to pay nothing for dowry but spend $$$ on the wedding.

Like I said, argue all you want. But in the West, that much money is a down payment for a house. A community made up of refugees who live in ghetto neighbourhoods, overly represented in crime, don’t own property, wouldn’t pay $80,000 in dowry even if they could. I asked my friend who is Sudanese and he told me that his brother didn’t even pay a dowry. :sass2:

Nowadays day it’s up to the girl and most will make something minor like slot of the big the holy book Quran for their dowry because they think that get them to heaven. So often the men came to think of marriage as something cheap and disposable. They’ll marry one woman today and move on to the next 5 or 10 yr later.

Divorce is frowned upon but it's taking place with greater frequency; this usually happens when the man cheats or tries to marry another woman back home; some men create multiple families, and think it's reasonable due to the dowry they paid.

lol I don’t understand why you’re arguing with him about his own community. Obviously not every guy in his community pays this much but it’s part of their culture. So who are you to tell him otherwise lol.
