5000 euro mahr? too much?

Like I said, argue all you want. But in the West, that much money is a down payment for a house. A community made up of refugees who live in ghetto neighbourhoods, overly represented in crime, don’t own property, wouldn’t pay $80,000 in dowry even if they could. I asked my friend who is Sudanese and he told me that his brother didn’t even pay a dowry. :sass2:

The article is obviously fake news and your Sudanese friend is the Encyclopedia of all things relating to our culture.

Is your friend Dinka-Nuer? If he is, it’s impossible for him to get married without forking over a downpayment in the thousands.

What girl? No somali girl is worth 5k. You pay her 5k while she marries a foreigner for free Hell she might pay for the wedding to. Give her 200$ and if she wants more tell her to f*ck of:camby:
🗣as usual spitting the truth they expect us to pay 3k+ but ask for an apple from a foreigner

lol I don’t understand why you’re arguing with him about his own community. Obviously not every guy in his community pays this much but it’s part of their culture. So who are you to tell him otherwise lol.
It is economics/maths, not culture. I believe him when he says Sudan nomads pay 100 cows in dowry.

“At the time of the 2016 Census, the median Individual Weekly Income for the Sudan-born in Australia aged 15 years and over was $377, compared with $615 for all overseas-born and $688 for all Australian-born.” Means the average Sudanese income in Australia is less than $20,000 a year. So it’s impossible for people living paycheck to paycheck to be able to save $80,000 and spend it stupidly on a dowry. :manny:

Dowry is not stupid first of all, its even mandated in Islam. And just because we as community made it very cheap for men to marry doesn’t mean every other community is doing the same. Even white men pay more in the form of engagement ring then the avg farax. And second, he said it’s a family effort. So the guy doesn’t come up with the money alone, his entire family both sides are chipping in. We could also do this very easily through ayuto but chose to not as marriage expenses are viewed as private affair in our community.

I don’t understand why would anyone put a # on their worth.
girls you you worth more.
It’s not about worth, maybe that’s how you guys view it. But dowry is there as an investment and as insurance policy for the girl - at least this was what it was meant for I should say.

Expensive dowry, means that more men will just marry out of the community. Why make it so hard to marry a person within your community, when foreigners don’t expect anything?

Also it is stupid because if you are able to save $80,000 with the help of your family for each man that gets married, then why don’t they save that money to get them on the property ladder so they can build generational wealth?

And who said the entire family is in the West? In my family, only one of my mother’s brother lives in the UK the rest of her family live in Somalia and Kenya. In my father’s family, he is the only one living in UK.

Our population is proportionally younger than all overseas-born Australians-- with the median age being 33 whereas it's 44 years for all overseas-born Australians and 38 for the total Australian population.

Additionally, we are a collectivist culture and I already alluded to this salient fact earlier on.

Well, as it has been narrated, the best of dowries are the easiest.

Its a sad state of affairs that women put such heavy yokes on already struggling brothers.

A surah or dua should be enough imho.

Are south sudanese christians?

In Sweden there is this guy from South Sudan called Magic Mike. You know about him? He is a social media profile.

Yes, we became a Christian majority people in the 80s.

I don't follow social media at all and wouldn't have a clue who he is.

Like I said it’s simply maths :ohno:

$20,000 a year minus rent, bills, food, entertainment, how much is left to save for a $80,000 dowry?

It's also simple maths that we have a very young population and we only arrived very recently, so the proportion of older South Sudanese men (that can afford that amount) will be proportionally smaller, due to these factors.
