What made the Islamic courts grow thay fast was because they were a grassroot faction. People sold their properties, women sold their gold just to help fund them.

Think about it. Ethiopia is surrounded by Somalia, Djibouti, Sudan which are all Muslim majority countries which Ethiopia has serious issues with such as the dam and previous wars, and Eritrea which is their most despised enemy while at the same time being landlocked. All of those countries also have coasts on the Red Sea or Gulf of Aden. If they ever came together they could blockade Ethiopia and literally starve it. South Sudan which is another bordering neighbor is also landlocked so of no help to Ethiopia. What remains is Kenya with a coast along the Indian Ocean to the south but is too far away to be of much help to Addis. If Ethiopia gains sea access though they can escape such a possibility and in my analysis this is why they badly want and need a naval port preferably on the Red Sea or Gulf of Aden coast because of its proximity to Eritrea, Sudan and Addis itself. They won’t give up on this objective because they know that their future is at risk being surrounded by historical enemies.
