:deadmanny: rageedi, he saved u walahi

early on, our clicks were mixed mostly jamaican and Somali with the odd token asian or Indian niggas

but somewhere down the line somalis just broke off and did our own thing and I have no clue why

I feel like the older you get the more in common you have with people like you and vice versa. When you're young, the differences aren't that great.

He was actually an asshole but that's a story for another thread

It's the same problem. Even within the US, you'll notice that the US states with the more lenient public welfare policies, by term and amount, fare worse for their lazy, money-grubbing constituents. See MN.

Very lazy thinking on many levels.

The main difference is the source of immigrants. In the U.S. and Canada, South Asians mainly arrive as educated, economic migrants who are well-suited to adjust to their new countries. They already have a history of education at home, speak English, and come from middle-class backgrounds. The reason they immigrate is because their earning potential/opportunities cap out in their countries of origin.

On the other hand, in the UK South Asian migrants have for the most part arrived as guest workers in the country. They come from very rural parts of their countries of origin with low levels of development/education. For example, almost the entire British Bengali community are from the rural part of this region in Bangladesh https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sylhet For Pakistanis, a big percentage of the UK community is from rural Kashmir. Its no surprise that people from these places have largely fared poorly compared to educated counterparts in North America originally from urban cities.

The difference for Somalis, is the vast majority arrived as refugees in all Western countries. Very few arrived with skills/background that are well-adapted for the countries they settled in or a history of education. Combine this to where they settled (public housing) its not really surprising that social mobility is low for now.

For all the huge emphasis you guys place in culture, the amusing thing is some of the best-performing Somalis Ive seen in the States live in the DMV - an area with a big AA population. Many of them though are children of guys who arrived in the States as university students or embassy officials. They also grew up in middle-class settings. They are often very close to AA's, listen to hiphop etc, yet are uniformly better achieving.

The difference in class and parental experiences play huge roles. It seems its comforting for some of you to believe its all about effort. Real world says different :damedamn:

I've said it before, Somalis are refugees and not self selected highly skilled immigrants. The average Indian is as dumb as a bag of rocks but their immigrant population here in the u.s. is comprised of the cream of the crop. Similarly story with the Nigerians.

Good post. My family is middle class because they were from an educated family and social mobility was easy for them. They came as asylum seekers but they were not "xoolo dhaqato" for all intents and purposes.

Yup. Nigerians are another good example. In the U.S. theyre seen as high-achieving, successful immigrants. In the UK theyre seen as criminals and largely useless. Again, the key difference is the former were selected.

Also the children of Nigerian immigrants in the States, often assimilate into AA culture rapidly. Because they are close to AAs in history/looks, you will often find it difficult to distinguish a second-generation Nigerian-American from an AA. Yet the former do very well. This goes against the "Somalis are doing terrible cause of hiphop/jamaicans/" blah blah. Class and culture dont always correlate.

It's susp, wallahi it is.

My high school experience wasn't typical. I got into an accerlerated learning program, and attended college level courses during HS in a 80-student trailer classroom establishment thingy right across the street from said college, mostly free of charge. The regular students called us the "nerd herd". By the time I finished HS, I had my associates. My parents didn't object to the kids I hung out with, and their gaalness wasn't a point of reference.

What's your view on British Indians? According to the Anatomy of Economic Inequality in the UK report, "Sikhs are on average the wealthiest Indians and indeed ethnic minorities, and the second wealthiest ethno-religious group after Jews, in the UK, with a median total household wealth of £229,000."

What's suspect is your parents instilling an anti Somali bias at a young age. Imagine a white kid being told to avoid hanging with white kids but it's a ok to f*ck with Somalis.

I was actually comparing/referring to asylum seeking refugees, not so much actual immigrants. They're farrrr worse off in more Socialist climes.

A gated community for successful Somalis would be great. All the hoodlums can stay out. Every Somali household should have the "Richest man in Babylon" book & teach their children financial management & discipline. We need to build & keep the wealth circulating within our community.

What's your view on British Indians? According to the Anatomy of Economic Inequality in the UK report, Sikhs are on average the wealthiest Indians and indeed ethnic minorities, and the second wealthiest religious group after Jews, in the UK, with a median total household wealth of £229,000.

The Sikhs played a big role in colonial India and relatively flourished under it is a minority. The Brits relied on them in the bureaucracy and the military, and they had a centuries long interaction with the West. Im also sure their broad, collective culture is very good for entrepreneurship. Also their history of being used to assimilation/integration as a minority likely has helped them adapt to a similar position in the West. Anyway these are my guesses, but good question.

What are the White kids doing in that context? I don't think it was weird considering what they were up to.

It's definitely suspect that, at 14, you were told women are 'rape artists'.

Refugees at large, do better in Canada than they do the States. Canada has much more liberal policies than the U.S. for the most part.

Its likely a balance is best. Id say the most harmful aspect of "socialist" countries like Scandinavia to refugees like Somalis, are their strict labor policies. Strong union protections and high wages, make competition for jobs at the lower end of the spectrum difficult. Not to mention the language difference for Scandinavia. English is much easier to learn.

You have to admit, the hip hop ain't helping :icon lol:

I think it's a combination of low IQ, bad influences, and an expectation to act a certain way

They're confusing a symptom with the cause. But to be fair, I see similar discussions in other communities that struggle.

Its much simpler to solely blame it on culture and effort :mjcry:
